When Lts Compton and Winslow reported to Capt Fisher they had just completed the six month Recon course and had been the only ones out of the original class of fifteen to do so. The training was a difficult mix of classroom work and physical training. Thus the two Lieutenants were conversant with Marine Corps history,customs, and tradition and were experts on large and small unit tactics. The physical training left Debra and Michelle as excellent runners and swimmers. Each had attained Black Belts in two disciplines and continued to lift weights for two hours a day as they had done during the course. Both were experts in every type of weapon in the Marine Corps arsenal. Each stood 6'1" and weighed 205 lbs. ........... The survival skills of the Recon Marines were legendary. The last test of the course required the individual to be dropped 100 miles from base with only a small knife and a weapon from the past and to make their way back within a five day period. To make the task more difficult, the individual had no food or water and was ordered to remove all clothes. Debra chose a bow and arrow while Michelle chose a sword. All were found wandering aimlessly far from the base. All three were treated for dehydration and hospitalized for 48 hours. One of the failed candidates was sent with Lts Compton and Winslow  to First Battalion and reported to Capt Fisher. While Debra and Michelle were given choice combat assignments, Lt John Edwards was assigned by Capt Fisher as Laundry and Morale Officer. After the war of 2015 there were four areas in the former United States where humans lived. New City was by far the most advanced. Adrian Jansen and her brilliant team of scientists had devised a force shield which allowed for filtered air to breathe while excluding the brain dulling effects of the radiation from the war. The closest inhabited area to New City was in the area formerly known as California. Their settlement was known as Oceana. The society of Oceana was male dominated and its leaders were jealous of the great strides made by New City. While they could observe via the internet, penetration of the force shield was not possible. The other problem for the leaders of Oceana was the brain dulling effects of the radiation exposure. As some of the womyn Council members remarked, "It made them even dumber than they used to be." ........There existed two checkpoints in the shield to allow for a periodic removal of nuclear waste to a secure site outside of New City. These 2 checkpoints were each staffed by a Battalion of Marines such as First Battalion to which Lts Compton, Winslow and Edwards reported. At that time the Marine Corps was fully integrated among the sexes and womyn were just beginning to assert their leadership skills.........In an attempt to find out why New City was more advanced than Oceana, the leaders of Oceana decided to send a patrol to infiltrate New City's force shield. They were interested in capturing a few females for experimentation. The question they wanted answered was why were they so much smarter. They also intended to steal a few weapons which were far superior than anything available in Oceana. To accomplish this there was a need for collaboration with someone who could allow access through Checkpoint 1. ..........In Lt Edwards the Oceanans found someone more than willing. Not only would he provide access, but he gladly suggested that Lts Compton and Winslow would do nicely for the Oceanans to carry back for experimentation. He was in possession of a schedule that showed a tour of checkpoint 1 for the 2 Recon Marines the following Saturday during the time he would be Officer of the Day. The following Saturday as Lt Edwards assumed the duties of Officer of the Day, Capt Fisher, Lts Compton and Winslow and a small patrol of 5 marines arrived in the vicinity of Checkpoint. The patrol of 5 remained with the truck and Capt Fisher and the 2 Lts made their way on foot for the remaining 2 miles to the actual checkpoint. After going a short distance realized Capt Fisher realizzed he had not taken a weapon and returned to the patrol to pick up a rifle just in case. He told the Lts to continue and they would meet up at  checkpoint #1. ......Unbeknownst to them Lt Edwards had arranged for an Oceanan patrol of 12 to infiltrate the shield. The patrol was under the command of Oceanan Major Thor Hansen a large sadistic man known in Oceana as a serial abuser of women. His mission was to capture 2 women of New City for analysis by the scientists of Oceana and to retreive as many weapons as possible. Hopefully, those weapons could be duplicated by the Oceanans. .........Shortly Lts Compton and Winslow found themselves ensnared in a cargo net trap, and quickly shot with tranquilizer darts and immobilized. Once they were tied up a guard was left and Major Hansen and the patrol went in search of the New City patrol to kill the marines and steal their weapons. However, Capt Fisher had happened on the scene, eliminated the guard and released the two Lts. ........Under the direction of Capt Fisher the 3 went after the Oceanan patrol. Maor Hansen had gone toward higher ground to better direct his patrol and Capt Fisher sent the 2 Lts after him with orders to subdue him but take him alive as he was the only one who could reveal who had allowed them access. Capt Fisher went after the remaining patrol and in a furious firefight eliminated the patrol. Meanwhile the 2 Lts stalked and confronted the Oceanan Major. At 6' 2" and 230 lbs Maj Hansen was a beast. As Lt Compton approached him he laughed and drew back his huge right hand to smash the Recon Lt. The applicable principle in New  City was "Justice delayed is Justice denied". He was further distressed to learn that in view of the excellent civilian and police agencies, the accused were presumed to be guilty by reason of the charge unless innocence can be shown beyond a reasonable doubt. He also learned that womyn and bois were incarcerated in the same prison, The Sarah Palin Correctional Facility, named in honor of the pre war politician who stood up to the males of her generation, although some of the Council members wished she had done so more eloquently. Edwards repeated a few of the rumors he had heard about the prison. Hansen thought he could probably run the prison with his experience and toughness.........Meanwhile Capt Fisher and the Lts were ordered to the Council chambers to be recognized for their bravery. While Hansen and Edwards were transported in chains to the pre trial detention portion of the Sarah Palin Correctional facility, Capt Fisher and Lts Compton and Winslow rode in relative comfort to New City. The plan was for the three to attend an awards ceremony at the Council chambers on Wednesday morning, 2 days away. .............Meanwhile, Hansen and Edwards were having their initial interview with their court appointed attorney. As he sat at his desk, Lauren wondered why he had ever taken this case. Of course, he had little choice once the Council had designated him for appointment as the lawyer for Edwards and Hansen. He suspected that the Council wanted someone with little experience so that an example would be made of the defendants. Today, indeed, had been a disaster from the beginning. Today was the day motions were to be heard and a jury selected, one day before trial. Lauren had filed a motion to suppress the statement of Hansen naming Edwards on the grounds that it had been coerced. After Lt Compton testified as to the what had occurred that day, the Court called Hansen to the stand. The prosecutor took him step by step through the events of that day. Eric asked for 2 hours to go to the weight room to speak with Lts Compton and Winslow , with whom he had grown close.
