Ok, If you want my advice, but I don't consider myself a pro at all. I just started doing this stuff before I had a computer. I would make Xerox printouts, and the use an ink eraser and alter the image, make changes with pencils,  then copy it again and again. When I got a computer that all changed.
Trying to make a drawing look real can be a very tough job. I work from the back most parts forward. Clean up the outlines first, try to make it crisp and sharp. You can paste in body parts from an image that has like color and shading that has a similar pose (always be aware of the light source). You will still have to make adjustments. You can clone in skin as well to get texture. Then lighten, darken, and adjust colors areas as needed. Always respect the background. Even though most people will know that the image has been altered, the background makes it more believable. Above all, lighting is the key.
