The future is female

On July 17th, 2057, at 3:22 PM and 12 seconds Eastern Seaboard time, every male human across the entire Sol system dropped dead.  A mining operation on the dark side of the moon unearthed a strange orb assumed to be of alien origin in a tomb-like underground chamber decorated with carvings of women ruling over men. The second one of the workers first touched the orb, the so-called Z Event (so named because Z comes after Y) happened.  Many calendars started to measure years PZE (post Z Event).  It took a while, but technology had advanced to the point of being able to move on.  Cloning humans was still experimental new technology, but necessity is the mother of invention and great strides in that field were quickly made.  Gene editing had advanced far enough to allow a full gender transition within a matter of days, so giving women male reproductive organs and leaving them otherwise unchanged became a common practice.  The increase in testosterone production this provided also made that kind of transformation popular among athletes. 

On February 9th, 2063 AD (6PZE) first contact with intelligent alien life occurred when the ESC Aphrodite was sent to investigate a mysterious signal in the Kuiper Belt and found a floundering research vessel built by a species called the Fenorai, whose females were insect like humanoids with psionic powers, while the beatle like males were non sapient.  Apparently the vanished race that built the sphere, known as the Matriarchy, had left their mark on virtually every sapient species with a male/female distinction in the galaxy, making females the dominant or only gender, and were believed to have meddled with the evolution of others, such as the Fenorai, for the same purpose.  The archeological remnants of lost civilizations was a thriving trade throughout the galaxy, ranging from the Galactic Archeological Society and their sanctioned groups to the more legally questionable scavengers.  It is with one of the latter groups in 2249 that our story begins.
