There are the legends everyone talks about — Lenda Murray, Iris Kyle, Yaxeni Oriquen — but what about the athletes who never quite got the recognition they deserved?

Maybe they were ahead of their time.
Maybe they were overshadowed by dominant champions.
Or maybe their physiques just didn't align with judging trends.

Who do you think is the most underrated female bodybuilder in history?

That's a great question—because the history of women's bodybuilding is full of athletes who were phenomenal but just didn't hit at the "right" time or under the "right" criteria.

One name that always comes to mind is Bev Francis. People know her now, but I still think she's underrated in terms of how revolutionary she was. She essentially forced the sport to confront what "female muscularity" could look like. In the late '80s, she brought a level of size and density that judges weren't ready to reward consistently. If she'd competed a decade later—during Iris Kyle's era—she might have racked up multiple Olympia titles.

Another is Anja Schreiner. She actually won the 1992 Ms. Olympia, but she rarely gets mentioned among the greats. Her physique struck that balance of symmetry, muscle, and aesthetics that the judges were supposedly looking for, yet she's often overshadowed by bigger names before and after her. In some ways, she represents a "lost ideal" in the sport.

I'd also throw in Kim Chizevsky-Nicholls, even though she was a 4x Ms. Olympia. That might sound odd, but she's underrated in the sense that her dominance isn't talked about nearly as much as Lenda's or Iris's. She carried the torch in a transitional era and brought a level of conditioning and completeness that set the stage for what followed.

If we're talking deeper cuts, Gladys Portugues deserves more love too. She had one of the most marketable and aesthetically striking physiques of the early era, but never quite captured the top title during a very competitive time.

Honestly, a lot of "underrated" comes down to timing. The sport's judging standards have shifted so much that some physiques were almost destined to be misunderstood in their own era. Curious to see who others bring up—especially from the Saradas archives, because there are definitely some forgotten standouts in there.

Sadly, her dominance coincided with the complete shift in the bodybuilding business that would affected the female bodybuilding division for too long.

Bev Francis needs more credit. Her physiques was incredible. The 1991 Ms. Olympia demonstrated what the future women's bodybuilding physique was going to be. The Weiders were against her however. They literally instructed the judges not to give her a high placing in the 1991 Ms. Olympia. Maybe if she remained for a bit longer things would have changed in her favor.
