The Costume Fitting "Disaster"

When Mara stepped onto the soundstage, the first thing that happened was silence.

Not dramatic silence. Not scripted silence.

The kind that happens when people collectively realize something is... larger than expected.

Mara Volkova had won three regional bodybuilding titles and placed nationally twice. The production team had seen photos during casting — but photos didn't capture density. They didn't capture how her shoulders seemed carved rather than grown. They didn't capture the way her thighs pressed together with solid mass even when she stood relaxed.

And they definitely hadn't accounted for how much she had grown since her last fitting.

The costume assistant approached her with suspenders in hand — rugged, faux-leather straps meant to cross over her shoulders and attach to mechanic trousers.

They didn't reach.

The straps stretched, the metal clips trembling against the strain of her upper back.

Mara tilted her head slightly. "Sorry," she said, calm, professional. "I think I got bigger since the last fitting."

She wasn't flexing.

That was the problem.

Her traps already rose in gentle hills beside her neck. The back of the crop top they'd given her — meant to sit low and relaxed — now rode high because her chest pushed it outward. The hem curved upward over firm pectorals that shifted subtly every time she adjusted her posture.

The assistant tried again with the suspenders.

They still didn't reach.

Across the room, two lighting techs very deliberately studied a clipboard that absolutely did not require that much attention.

Getting Camera Ready

Before her scene, Mara had her own ritual.

She found a quiet corner near a prop crate labeled Thermal Coil Housing — Set B and dropped into a plank position.

Push-ups.

Slow. Controlled.

Down — chest nearly grazing the floor, triceps tightening like cables.

Up — pecs hardening visibly, deltoids rounding with each extension.

She didn't rush. She wanted the pump.

Each repetition brought more blood into her muscles, stretching the fabric of her crop top tighter. By the tenth rep, the material was clinging to her chest and shoulders. By the twentieth, a faint sheen of sweat began to gather along the ridge where her upper chest met her collarbone.

Her breathing deepened — steady, focused.

A production assistant walked past, slowed, and then very quickly remembered somewhere else to be.

Mara finished at thirty, held the top position for a few seconds, and deliberately flexed — not for anyone else, just to test the feeling. Her triceps pressed firm against the sleeve openings. Veins traced faint lines along her forearms.

She stood.

The trousers — rugged, grease-stained costume wear — tightened across her glutes and thighs as she adjusted them. When she rolled her shoulders back, the suspenders strained again, metal clips creaking softly.

"Perfect," the director called out. "You look strong."

Mara smirked slightly. "That's the idea."

The Set: Spaceport Repair Bay

The scene was simple.

Her character, Rhea Korr — a freelance mechanic in a distant galaxy — was repairing a starship engine component when the main character entered to buy a rare part.

Simple dialogue.

Background sparks.

A little attitude.

What hadn't been in the script was the note from the producer just before rolling.

"Really lean into the physicality," he said, eyes lingering a fraction too long as she rotated her shoulder experimentally. "Flex when you're tightening bolts. Show that she's strong."

Mara noticed the look.

She had seen that look before — at competitions, expos, autograph lines. Appreciation mixed with fascination. Something just slightly too intent.

For a split second, she felt a flicker of surprise.

Then she remembered the paycheck.

She gave him a measured nod.

Rolling Camera

"Action."

Mara grabbed the oversized hydro-spanner prop and knelt beside the mock engine housing.

As she twisted the tool, she deliberately tightened her grip.

Her forearm flexed first — tendons standing out cleanly under the skin. Then her bicep peaked as she pulled harder, the muscle swelling against the snug sleeve opening. The crop top shifted upward again, revealing the defined shelf of her upper abs beneath.

A bead of sweat slid slowly from her temple down along the curve of her jaw.

The main character stepped into frame.

"Rhea Korr?"

Without looking up, she answered, voice low and grounded. "Depends. You here to waste my time, or can you afford my work?"

She stood in one smooth motion.

And when she did, she rolled her shoulders back — intentionally.

Her chest tightened.

Not exaggerated. Just enough.

The fabric stretched taut across her pecs, the movement subtle but unmistakable. The suspenders pulled sharply over her rounded delts, emphasizing their shape.

The main character blinked — part acting, part genuine reaction.

"I need a pulse regulator for a K-7 drive."

She wiped her hands slowly on a grease cloth, flexing her fingers afterward as if shaking out tension. Her forearms hardened again.

"That part's heavy," she said, stepping closer. "Not everyone can handle installing it."

A small smirk.

She reached behind her to grab a prop crate from a shelf — one that the prop team had made intentionally light.

But Mara lifted it as if it had real weight.

Her biceps swelled.

Her triceps locked.

The suspenders strained audibly.

The producer, behind the monitor, leaned forward.

Mara felt it.

The gaze.

Focused. Appreciative. Almost hungry.

For a moment, she considered easing off.

Instead, she adjusted her grip and deliberately flexed harder — veins faintly visible now along her arms as the pump from earlier intensified.

She set the crate down in front of the main character with a soft thud.

"Installation's extra," she added, voice lowering slightly. "Unless you think you can manage it yourself."

The line wasn't written that way.

The director didn't stop her.

Between Takes

"Cut."

A pause.

Then the producer's voice again: "That's great. But in the next one — when you hand him the part — really tense your arms. Like you're showing how effortless it is for you."

Mara tilted her head slightly.

So that was the direction.

She wiped more glycerin-based "sweat" across her shoulders and collarbone. Under the lights, it caught beautifully along the curves of her muscles, highlighting every contour.

"Sure," she said calmly.

Back to position.

"Action."

This time, when she lifted the part, she didn't just lift it.

She held it suspended between them for an extra beat.

Her biceps peaked — rounded and firm.

Her pecs tightened subtly, shifting the neckline of the crop top upward again.

Her abs braced, visible even under the costume grime.

She met the main character's eyes.

"Careful," she murmured. "It bites."

For a second, the line carried more than mechanical warning.

The producer didn't say a word.

But he didn't look away either.

After the Scene

When they finally wrapped, Mara rolled her shoulders once more, letting the tension fade.

Her muscles relaxed slightly — though even relaxed, they still filled the costume in a way it clearly hadn't been designed for.

The suspenders were unhooked carefully, leaving faint indentations across the tops of her shoulders where they'd pressed into solid muscle.

One of the makeup artists approached cautiously.

"You were incredible," she said.

Mara smiled.

Professional. Confident.

She knew exactly what she had done.

And as she headed toward her trailer, she flexed her arm once more — just to feel the lingering pump.

The fabric strained again.

Somewhere behind her, someone forgot to pretend they weren't staring.

And she didn't mind at all...
