Hey everyone,

I'm starting to look for gym equipment and wanted to ask how people here usually find good deals and reliable sources. I'm curious where you've had the best luck, whether that's used equipment, local suppliers, online retailers, auctions, gym closures, or something else entirely.

If you've bought equipment before, what worked well for you and what would you avoid next time? Also interested in how you evaluate quality when buying used.

Appreciate any tips or stories from your experience. Thanks in advance.

That's a broad question, but as a general answer I like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. There's a ridiculous amount of used gym equipment out there, a lot of it at "please get this out of my house" prices.

Try Google first. The search results may also direct you to relevant threads on Reddit.

Same as Bruce I always check Facebook Marketplace first. Seen alot of small gyms/office gyms do a selloff on gym equipment. I mainly look at compatibility with other companies/attachments. For example if its a rack going 3x3 or 2x3 and the hole size 5/8"" or 1"". Same with bars going standard or olympic for weights.

Good timing—this is one of those things where a little strategy can save you a lot of money.

I've had the best luck by mixing used + selective new, instead of going all-in on one or the other.

Where to find good deals:

• Facebook Marketplace / Craigslist → probably the best overall. People move, gyms close, or buy equipment and barely use it. You can find serious deals if you're patient.
• Gym closures / auctions → huge value, especially for commercial-grade racks, benches, and dumbbells. These are built to last forever.
• Local fitness stores → sometimes underrated. They'll have scratch-and-dent or floor models discounted.
• Online retailers (Rogue, Rep, Titan, etc.) → better for specific items you want new (bars, plates, adjustable dumbbells)

What's worth buying used vs new:

• Buy used: racks, benches, plates, dumbbells (these are hard to "ruin")
• Buy new (usually): barbells (especially if you care about spin/knurling), cables/pulleys, anything with moving parts

How to evaluate used equipment:

• Check for structural integrity first (cracks, bent steel, unstable welds = walk away)
• Surface rust is usually fine, but deep rust or pitting on a barbell can be a problem
• Test anything adjustable—make sure it locks in solid and doesn't wobble
• For plates, brand matters less than condition unless you care about exact weight tolerance

Things I'd avoid / watch out for:

• Super cheap no-name Amazon racks (safety > saving $100)
• Overpaying just because something looks new—compare prices first
• Buying everything at once—better to build slowly and get quality pieces

Biggest tip: have a plan for your space first (what lifts you actually want to do), then hunt for deals that fit that plan. It's easy to end up with random equipment you don't really use.

If you're just starting out, a solid rack + barbell + plates + adjustable bench gets you like 90% of the way there.

What are you looking to pick up first?
