The First One

This is chapter one of a story that I hope to actually finish this time.

Titaness, the world's greatest heroine, was unhappy.  It had been building for a while, she supposed.  Despite being a ten foot tall superwoman weighing thousands of pounds of muscle, with godlike strength and incomprehensible speed, and being impervious to virtually any form of harm, among a number of other powers, she could only be in one place dealing with one problem at a time.  She could hear every cry for help in the world, but even she and the rest of the Guild combined could only answer a fraction of them.  Such as the ones she was answering now.  A gunman was holding a monorail station hostage.  Titaness would have to act fast to avoid loss of life.  And act fast she did, but in this case just barely not fast enough.  In a panic as she grabbed him, the gunman got one shot off.  And a young black woman, college-aged at the most, cried out in pain as she collapsed into a puddle of blood.  "NO!"  Titaness cried, hastily subduing the gunman and dashing to the girl's side, "No, no, no, no, no..." She took the girl's hand.  It was then that she felt something new.  She could still save this girl.  She could solve her problem.  So she did.  Somehow, without losing any herself, she shared her power with the girl.

Tanya felt the pain subside.  She sat up as her wound closed, her mind sharpened, her senses were improved by a factor of millions, and her body grew.  By the time she finished getting to her feet, she stood just over eight feet tall, bulging all over with thousands of pounds of gigantic muscles.  She looked up at Titaness, the only person present still bigger than her, as she felt her body and mind surging with newfound power.  "Thank you."

The First One

Tanya had never expected she would ever be brought to the Guild's Guardpost.  Then again she'd never expected she would ever be transformed into an eight foot tall mountain of superpowered muscle, but she supposed times changed.  Tanya was currently of two minds about her situation; awe at actually getting to be on board the Guild's orbital base, and a realization of how much bigger she now was.  The former was, initially, her primary train of thought when Titaness lead her from the teleporter they had used to get to the station, through the huge (even relative to them) hallway apparently leading to the conference room, but she was jolted into the latter by a passing janitor who barely came up to her (both hugely muscled and far more well-endowed than before her transformation) chest.

The rest of the Guild was already in the conference room by the time the two superwomen reached it.  Titaness quickly took her place at the table in the center of the room and called for order.  Those of the Guild's other twenty members who had been speaking fell silent, as Titaness related the story of what had happened three days before.  "In light of these events," the Guild's unofficial leader concluded, "I nominate Tanya for a probationary membership in the Guild.  All in favor, say 'aye'."

A small chorus of "Aye"s rang out.  It was then that Tanya first really noticed how much her hearing had been improved.  She could actually make out each individual voice.  Counting them, seventeen of Titaness' fellow heroes were in favor.

"That settles it, then," Nikki Flamel observed from her seat three to the right from Titaness, "But she'll need a costume and a name.  Any ideas, newbie?"

"I've been thinking about that, actually," Tanya replied, trying not to let her nerves creep into her voice, "Call me Scion."

The First One

An alarm, audible throughout the Guardpost, was blaring.  The main screen in the dispatch room displayed a massive, reptilian beast, taller than any of the buildings around it, emerging from the sea off the east coast near Tokyo and heading inland, with smaller creatures emerging from the slits along its sides.

"Again with this?!?!" Lightspeed exclaimed, throwing up his hands.  "Seriously, it's like a couple times a MONTH over there at this point, this is ridiculous!"

Titaness sighed.  "Maglev, Giantess, Sculptor.  And take Scion with you."

The flash from the teleporter cleared, leaving the four heroines on the roof of a hotel on the edge of Tokyo, with their target and a horde of its spawn approaching from the distance.

"Nervous?"

Tanya looked down at Maglev, an athletic but slim woman of living metal, who, at 6'3, would have towered over her before her transformation.  "Yeah."  Funny, Tanya thought to herself, in the three days after her transformation she couldn't imagine ever being nervous again.  It wasn't until Titaness brought her up to the Guardpost for the first time that she actually did feel nervous again, and even after that the discovery in the weeks afterward that she could, among other things, throw around weights weighing hundreds of thousands of tons like they were nothing, she had again felt like nothing could make her nervous anymore.  But now there were other people's lives in her hands, and she was realizing she had, again, been wrong.

"Don't worry," Giantess, a blonde, green-eyed woman who, though less muscular, was one of the few people as tall as Tanya now, reassured her, "you get used to this stuff."  She leapt off the roof, already rapidly growing as she fell.  By the time she hit the ground she towered head and shoulders above the building.  "Let's do this."

As Maglev took to the air at supersonic speeds, the Sculptor-a Middle Eastern woman who couldn't have been more than a couple years older than Tanya-walked to the edge of the roof.  "Try to keep up."  With that, a chunk of concrete from the street below rose up to just beyond the edge of the roof.  The Sculptor stepped onto it, then rode it into the air, towards the massive creature.

"Alright, then," Tanya said to herself, "Let's go."  With one last look at her newly hulking physique, she began flying, closing in on the target at an increasing speed.  Unsure what else to do, she made a beeline towards the massive creature, one fist outstretched, until that fist connected with its belly.  The beast roared in pain and shock, staggering back a few steps and  crushing a few of its own spawn underfoot,  before regaining its balance.  For a moment, Tanya stopped in surprise.  Then she pressed the attack, giving her opponent an uppercut to the lower jaw.  Again, the creature roared, before attempting to grab her in one of its massive claws.  Operating on reflex at this point, Tanya grabbed one of its fingers, almost as massive as she was, then squeezed it in a bear hug until she heard a loud CRACK.  With the kaiju again reeling, she snapped off the claw on that finger, then flew further up and tossed it at a supersonic speed into the beast's right eye.  The creature roared in pain once again as the improvised projectile went clear through its eye, then its brain, before lodging in the back of its skull.  With that it fell to the ground, dead.

Tanya hovered there catching her breath for a few seconds before looking around.  It was only then that she registered that Maglev, Giantess and the Sculptor hadn't even reached her yet.  Or more to the point, she'd passed them without even realizing it.  And all three of them were staring at her with awed disbelief on their faces.

"Holy shit." Giantess was the first to say anything, her booming voice echoing through the entire area.

Maglev whistled appreciatively, while the Sculptor nodded, saying, "Impressive.  We've still got the small fry to deal with, but impressive nonetheless."

The kaiju's spawn didn't last much longer.  The Sculptor impaled them on spikes molded out of the ground they stood on, Maglev crushed or cut them with any large pieces of metal she could find, Giantess crushed them either in hand or underfoot, and Tanya... Tanya destroyed more of them than the other three heroines combined.  Monsters were obliterated with her strength, burned or bisected with her heat vision, crushed under thrown cars and more.  Finally, with the last enemies dealt with, she laughed.  She had completed her first mission with the Guild.  But of course there was more to come...

The First One

Is this story going well so far?  Any questions, comments, etc?  I appreciate feedback.

The Raven

I've been enjoying it so so far. It's mostly just a concept, what we've seen. So I'd be interested in a plot synopsis or your goals for the story as a whole. You're writing is always great and I feel I have no right to criticise that. So keep it up.

The First One

The broadcast was simultaneously on every frequency the Guardpost's comms equipment could pick up.  The screens in the dispatch room all showed the Virologist, plague doctor costume, syringe-equipped gloves and all.  As the Guild watched, Titaness' old enemy made her demands.  "I want to test Titaness' little protege," she rasped, her voice betraying about as much emotion as her mask, "Scion, I know you're receiving this." The image changed to a few dozen people of various demographics handcuffed to the railing of what looked like a zoo enclosure.  "Come to the San Diego Zoo.  Alone.  Take more than two hours, or bring anyone else with you, and they die."  The image switched back to the Virologist, now holding a small white mouse in the palm of her right hand.  With one of the syringes on her left glove, she injected it with one of her bioengineered viruses.  The mouse squealed in pain for a few seconds before exploding into a bloody mess.  "The clock starts now," the villainess concluded, as dispassionately as before despite the viscera coating a significant amount of her costume.

Scion flew towards San Diego, mentally reviewing everything she knew about the Virologist.  It had been a month since the assignment in Tokyo, and this was the first time she'd be going up against an opponent this dangerous on her own.  Helen Hayes, as the few people close to the Virologist knew her, had no known powers herself, but was notorious for her specially tailored viruses, which tended to be either incredibly lethal, such as the one she'd used on the mouse, or mutagenic, transforming people, animals, and in some cases plants into horrific monsters, some of which even had superpowers in their own right.  Fortunately for the world, Helen seemed to care more about experimenting than pursuing world domination or any other far-reaching goal, but that hadn't stopped her from accumulating a substantial body count and creating hordes of monsters, ever seeking to "improve" on her prior creations.  In all likelihood, she had infected most of the people and animals at the zoo with her latest strain, meaning she herself was far from the only enemy Scion would have to deal with.

Scion landed in the zoo's currently deserted parking lot.  "You wanted me?!  Here I am!" she shouted, flexing her giant, superhuman biceps both to intimidate her enemy and reassure herself.

"Ah, good," the Virologist said over the zoo's PA system.  "Now, rise above my creations... or fall before them!"

With that, a horde of... creatures streamed out the zoo's front gates toward Scion.  The majority looked to have once been human.  At the same time, however, they clearly no longer were.  They didn't all have the same combination of features, but they did all have long, sharp, jagged teeth and massive claws, and disproportionately long arms, huge, bulging eyes, double jointed limbs, tongues much longer than they should have been, and unnaturally wide, toothy mouths were all common ones.

There were other monsters approaching too, of course.  A pair of crocodiles as long as city buses, extra eyes lining the upper half of their snouts.  Gorillas with spiked, scaly skin and long tails ending in clusters of spikes.  Armor plated centipedes over ten feet long.  Gigantic spiders with legs ending in razor sharp blades.  And bringing up the rear, a snake so massive it barely even fit through the gates, and was easily hundreds of feet long.  As it coiled its rear half and raised its head, towering over everything else in the area, the creatures attacked.

On some level, Scion was glad nobody had ever been restored from being mutated by one of the Virologist's viruses.  With no realistic hope of ever returning these people or animals to who/what they had once been, she had no reason to hold anything back.  So she didn't.  The formerly human infected couldn't do much to her, even when most of them dogpiled her.  She threw them off, surprising herself a bit with how easy it was, with their teeth and claws unable to leave a scratch on her.  One of the crocodiles was nearing her position by then, mouth wide open, but she clapped her hands hard enough to create a sonic wave, sending it flying backwards, crushing several smaller creatures of varying types under it as it landed.  The second crocodile attacked her with six long tongues, only for Scion to grab one and toss the creature away.  A frog the size of a smart car with several small horns spat a rapidly hardening slime that encased the lower half of her body, but only took her a slight effort to break free from.

It wasn't until the rest of the horde was dealt with that the giant snake did anything.  Specifically it whipped its tail, knocking Scion across the parking lot, knocking cars out of her path before she came to a stop just outside it.  "Ouch."  Scion got to her feet, her left side, where the creature had hit her, stinging with the first pain she'd felt since gaining her powers.  She wasn't bleeding and nothing felt or looked like it was broken, but it hurt all the same.  Not a good sign.  As she was processing that, the creature spat a glob of what Scion assumed was poison or acid.  She dodged, not willing to take any chances at this point, and the asphalt where it hit began sizzling and melting.

The snake moved to bite Scion now, lashing out with its head as fast as it had with its tail.  Better prepared this time, she grabbed it by its massive fangs.  Both of them were still as they attempted to push each other for over a minute, Scion's muscles bulging larger than ever in the face of the first thing to seriously challenge her strength.

The Virologist chuckled.  "Not so easy now, is it?  I must say, that creature is easily one of my finest creations.  You've fought well.  There's no shame in being killed by something better."

After another minute of this, Scion changed tactics.  Slowly but surely, she twisted the snake's head to the left until there was an audible CRACK and the beast collapsed.  The hostages and the Virologist herself were easy to find after that.

To be continued...
