What a great topic! I tend to agree here. The late 90s and early 00s particularly saw some of my absolute favorite. I liked the incredible VARIETY offered by these ladies which is often not mentioned. You had smaller more right packages like Valentina Chepiga, and of course the mass monsters of the day we all love. Nowadays it feels all the women are headed toward ine specific look, this extension of what we see in physique.

Eh, I dont like the modern direction so much. I liked the days when you could have a shape like Laura Binetti or Lisa Aukland, on over to a Bonny Priest and they all could nab high placings. I miss the individuality women's bodybuilding was finding in those days as women were basically just unleashing themselves in all directions seeing what worked. The answer is it all worked!

Ok so im going to approach this as a gut feeling top 10, just rattle them off without thinking of it as ser it stone.

1st 10 that come to mind:

Paula Suzuki
Lesa Lewis
Bonny Priest
Sandy Riddell
Laura Binetti
Denise Hoshor
Annie Rivieccio
Marja Lehtonen
Gayle Moher
Juliette Bergmann

Honorable mention to Raye Hollitt, as she basically introduced me to fbb with her appearances as an actor more than as a competitor on the stage, so thats why I'll say Honorable mention. But she really did kick off my interest.

I was at first going to just write Lora Ottenad's name 10 times but then I remembered Marie-Crooks and the gears kept turning from there.

Dah but now I realize I excluded Yaxeni Oriquen and Nursel Gurler. Criminal. Ten is tough.

Great thread, and I'm with all of you on this being an unmatched era.

What really stands out when reading these lists is exactly what FbbLegends pointed out: variety. The 90s/early-2000s didn't reward just one template. You could have radically different physiques standing side by side and all be considered elite depending on condition, structure, and presentation.

Rocko's list highlights that "middle ground" perfectly , women like Ottenad, Policky, Rutkowski, Hoshor, and Bramwell had muscle, but also very distinct silhouettes and personalities. None of them looked interchangeable, which is something that's definitely missing today.

Nahuel-H's list is almost a historical backbone of the era. You really can't talk about that time without Lenda and Kim anchoring the extremes , Lenda's refinement and balance versus Kim pushing muscular boundaries. And picks like Rutkowski and Yolanda Hughes really underline how deep the talent pool was, not just at the top but throughout the ranks.

What I loved most about that period is that judges seemed more open to asking "Does this physique work?" rather than "Does this fit the look?"
As FbbLegends said, you could go from Laura Binetti to Bonny Priest to Valentina Chepiga, and they were all valid expressions of female bodybuilding.

That experimental phase , when women were still discovering how far they could push size, shape, and conditioning , is what made the era special. It wasn't perfect, but it was alive, unpredictable, and full of individuality.

Hard to argue against it being the golden age of FBB.

Female Bodybuilding

Here's my own 90s/early-2000s FBB top 10, based on impact, physique quality, individuality, and how well they represent that golden era. Like everyone else said, order is basically impossible, so this is more of a "tier of greatness" than a ranking.

🏆 Top Female Bodybuilders – 1990s / Early 2000s

Lenda Murray
The blueprint. Balance, symmetry, shape, and dominance. She proved mass and beauty didn't have to cancel each other out.

Kim Chizevsky-Nicholls
The mass monster standard. Dense, powerful, and unapologetically muscular — she redefined how far women could push size.

Denise Rutkowski
One of the biggest "what-ifs" in FBB history. Incredible structure, flow, and athletic look with serious muscle.

Laura Creavalle
Pure classic bodybuilding lines. Tight waist, beautiful proportions, and consistency at the highest level.

Yaxeni Oriquen
A perfect bridge between aesthetics and mass. She brought femininity, charisma, and crowd-pleasing presence.

Bonny Priest
Underrated powerhouse. Thick, strong, and visually impressive while still maintaining shape.

Juliette Bergmann
Longevity queen. Sharp conditioning, classic presentation, and elite competitiveness across decades.

Lesa Lewis
Unique structure and unmistakable look. Wide, powerful upper body that stood out in any lineup.

Debi Leszewski
Consistency personified. Dense muscle, polished posing, and a fixture of top-tier contests.

Valentina Chepiga
Perhaps the most "perfectly built" physique of the era — round muscle bellies, balance, and elegance.

Honorable Mentions (because the depth was insane):

Heather Policky • Denise Hoshor • Yolanda Hughes • Paula Suzuki • Marja Lehtonen • Vickie Gates • Sandy Riddell

What makes this era unbeatable isn't just the champions — it's that every one of these women looked different, yet all were legitimate threats onstage. No single mold, just peak experimentation and evolution.

Golden age indeed! But youre not going to partake and share a few of your faves? It's daunting for sure. Im totally not married to my list bc I know im forgetting some favorites.

I feel so silly not mentioning Laura Creavalle. She had some MIGHTY showings in the mid 90s. It was always weird to me that she was stuck playing 2nd fiddle to Lenda or Kim, bc she was so elite. In my mind I dont think of her legacy as lesser than theirs. Of all the gals that deserved an Olympia and never got one, Laura probably tops the list, especially bc theres so many years she probably could or dare I say SHOULD have won.

The early to mid 90s Laura physique sticks with me more than Lenda's. '94 Olympia she was shredded. The orange bikini in 91; Incredible look.

Of course, here's my Top 10 list from the 90s / early-2000s FBB era, built around impact, conditioning, individuality, and how emblematic each athlete was of that experimental golden age. Again, not ranked just a snapshot of greatness.

• Cory Everson (Even as the competitive torch passed, her influence shaped the entire decade. Structure, charisma, and mainstream visibility still echoed through the 90s.)

• Vickie Gates (A staple of elite lineups. Powerful upper body, polished presentation, and always competitive at the biggest shows.)

• Yolanda Hughes (One of the most detailed backs ever seen. Conditioning and thickness that stood out even among mass-heavy competitors.)

• Heather Policky (Exceptional structure and symmetry with muscular density that aged extremely well into the early 2000s.)

• Paula Suzuki (Compact, thick, and intense. A physique that screamed pure bodybuilding with no compromises.)

• Denise Hoshor (A perfect example of the "middle ground" physique — muscular, athletic, and aesthetically pleasing.)

• Marja Lehtonen (Hard, grainy conditioning and European toughness. Always brought a serious, no-nonsense look to the stage.)

• Sandy Riddell (Strong, dense, and quietly consistent. Never flashy, but always formidable.)

• Gayle Moher (Canadian powerhouse known for rugged muscularity and competitive grit throughout the decade.)

• Zuzana Korinkova (Dense muscle, commanding presence, and an important European representative during FBB's global expansion.)

And Raye Hollitt, Annie Rivieccio, Debbie Bramwell, Nikki Fuller, Tazzie Colomb.

This list really shows how deep the field was beyond the Olympia winners, women who might not always get spotlighted today but absolutely defined what competitive female bodybuilding looked like during its most diverse and fearless era.
