Yes LBC.   She never struck you as OMG big !! ( and to be honest some of us way back then felt resentment that the likes of Kay Baxter , Pillow etc never got the same kind of push to the top by the powers that were in power like she did.  But what a sweet package that made gals sorta want to hit the gym , and guys just couldn't get enough....and then there the Weider empire that no doubt made a few bucks as well.   She certainly was ( and still is) a shot in the arm for the sport.  I never get tired of looking at her pics

Alison, she always struck me as "muscular enough to be hot." I really liked her thighs and calves. But she was no Kay or Pillow or Lisa Elliott or Sue Ann McKean in my eyes.

But, yes, my theory always has been Weider saw her as the perfect role model/draw to get women into the gym, especially women then in their 30s, raised before sports were encouraged for young girls (generally) or any real workouts encouraged for women. Think about the average 35-45 woman back then who is multiple kids and a decade into the average marriage (with accompanying insecurities). Rachel was dynamic, sexy, strong, exciting...the type of woman the average wife feared, hated and wanted to be again, even if she never was before. She fit that more than any other bodybuilder at the time.

Still, when Muscle & Fitness illustrated a story with a photo of Rachel doing a gentle side tricep facing one way and thickly muscled Julie McNew -- all arms, thighs and calves, terrible torso -- doing a serious side tricep facing the other way, I thought "that's a woman who works out next to a serious, no bullshit hardcore bodybuilder."

Julie's another sweet one.  We had a chance to spend some time together when she came to Maui as a guest poser.  Struck me as a natural....just a real muscular gal who worked out.  She as well was a very attractive girl.   Sweet as sweet could be.
