...may not be as recent as many think. It seems F. and P. were two already existing disciplines in the late 80s / early 90s in Europe.

It is well established that the NABBA et WABBA federations adopted both terms back in the early 80s. Originally NABBA had one category for women, the 'Open Bikini' class (Another term later co-opted by the IFBB ironically) from 1966 to 1985. From the 1986 Universe contest, the Figure and Physique classes were lauched as a means to allow harder competitors to get their chance at competing without "interfering" with the softer ones.
