From  Alexia Mizuik:
Today, we mourn the loss of a 42 year old young lady, Mel Balcom, a 3X Overall Women's Physique Champion, an Overall Women's Bodybuilding Champion & National Level Competitor whom Jean and I have always had the utmost respect for. Always the hardest worker in the room, I sit here remembering the day she kicked the s*** out of me in the gym training legs as I was so inspired by her drive and determination to be the best at everything she set out to do. I also remember the cardio sesh afterwards and her describing to me how bodybuilding had saved her life against her addictive personality and the demons that troubled her inside. Her sanctuary was the gym and her training. It kept her grounded and in check with reality. Winning four overall titles two of which she competed here in Moncton, she always stayed in touch periodically, letting me know how she was doing and always took the time out to tell me how much she loved the sport and how much she appreciated Jean and I for all the support given to her competitive journey through the years.

Sadly, this past year has been challenging for her with a world wind of emotions. This past January, I had tried to steer her back to the stage to keep her grounded in offering her a sponsorship to get back on stage. Her response was; "Bless your heart, I'll see how things go job wise, I got to get a job lined up first." My response was "You will, you're smart!" Sadly, we never got back in touch since that day and I'm deeply saddened for not checking in with her to see how she was making out. I always believed that the sport would lead her down the path to righteousness and put her back on the right track and say "welcome home". I wish we could have done more.

Unfortunately for Mel, the pain was too difficult & sadly she passed suddenly only yesterday. She will definitely be forever in our hearts, we are heartbroken and this leaves us wondering how we will survive this grief, but her memory will live through all of us in the fitness and bodybuilding industry. Mel, you will always be remembered for your courage during difficult times and your strength to keep going at your worst. The Fitness and Bodybuilding world will not be the same without you. "No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path." RIP Melissa Balcom – September 14, 1975 – June 26, 2018 (Photo Courtesy of Paul Girvan)

PS: Mel's family gave me permission to make this post before hand so to them thank you so much 🙏 for letting us mourn and remember an amazing lady and thank you Alexia Mizuik.
