This video follows a few of the contestants training for the show and then the contest footage. Aki Nishimoto was in her prime still and takes 1st place. Some great competitors, this was before the whole Physique thing started to take over.

There were so many amazing FBBs in Japan in those days.  Wonder what happened to them all.

Ironic actually cos in those days there were barely any female muscle athletes from Korea.  And 10 years laters most of the female Japanese muscle athletes seem to have vanished and there are tons of them from Korea instead.

Would be awesome seeing the top muscle women from both countries competing against each other.

Thanks, jadefoot! This was a nice little treat. My first time seeing Aki interviewed. I really enjoy how the women aren't glamorized and/or sexualized and appear natural (sans cosmetics) and wholesome in their interviews. I think that's one of the things I like so much about Aki. Apart from bodybuilding, she hasn't succumbed to the influences of what Western culture deems trendy or attractive, like many women throughout Asia i.e. hair, cosmetics, body augmentations, name brand clothing etc.

Well I think I can try to answer your question about what happened to a lot of Japanese FBB's.

When I was at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio with my wife I noticed there was a lot of korean FBB's and male bodybuilders there. But not that many Japanese FBB's of male bodybuilders there. I asked one of the Korean male bodybuilders there why so many Korean's are going into fitness and not that many Japanese?

He told me that the korean fitness industry grew cause of the way models and actors looked in Hollywood. Muscular, and fit bodies. So a lot of female and male koreans want the same look as well so they go into bodybuilding to achieve that goal. He told me majority of them take enhancements like steroids and hgh a lot. Which are drugs that anybody can get at a Korean pharmacy there. Doctors usually prescribed because they want to make money. Korean bodybuilders are major stars in the fitness world there, so they make a lot of money by doing pictures there and they product placement as well. Plastic surgery is common place as well.

In Japan using drugs are considered not honorable. And cheating is strongly forbidden. In any industry there. So that's why Japanese bodybuilders, male and female, get the skinny kind of bodies that they have without them. As much as they pack in protein shakes and foods here and there, they can only get to a certain level. They can do DVD's, magazines, and so fourth but they look exactly the same in all of them. Plus on the star power front of Japanese bodybuilding, Tomoko Kanda seems to be the most popular there. And that's all. No other FBB there were not able to achieve a great body like Tomoko did. She's an exception.
Plus Japanese bodybuilders leave the industry fast once they get married, and have children.  Korean bodybuilders are married, but very few. Most of them are single.

Again when me and my wife were at the Arnold Sports Festival we didn't see a lot of Japanese bodybuilders there. Just Korean, Korean, and more Korean.

Tomoko is more well known simply because she went to the US and even worked with some subscription based websites where members get photos and videos of her.  Plus recently she joined herbicepscam dot com too.  Most other Japanese or Asians for that matter tend to shy away from subscription based websites or camping sites like herbicepscam.  Guess the idea of schmoes drooling at them scares them.

As far as performance goes, I always felt Aki Nishimoto was in better shape and in fact I recall Aki defeated Tomoko before but not the other way round.  Anyway, back to the topic.

I believe generally fitness has declined in popularity in Japan.  Even if you don't talk about bodybuilding, there is always the figure/physique category and for ladies the fitness model category.  In fact even a small country like Singapore has seen a rise in the number of ladies taking part in fitness model competitions albeit locally and regionally only.  So I don't think its all because of the unwillingness to take steroids but rather Japanese just seem to have lost interest.

Oh and I would also like to point out China.  It has always been and in many ways still is, one of the most conservative countries in the world.

Yet there are more and more ladies from China competing in muscle sports be it bodybuilding, figure/physique or fitness modelling.  Many of the ladies there too do not take steroids but the lack of bulk from not using steroids has not prevented them from competing in categories that do no require sheer size.

In fact many Asian countries who were never on the muscle sports map as recent at 10 years back such as Vietnam, Thailand and Mongolia have also become more and more active in muscle sports.  Some of their ladies are quite massive (don't know if steroids is the reason or not) but majority are smaller sized and they take part in figure/physique or fitness modelling.

Guess its just a cultural shift for the Japanese.
