Best Olympia Physiques Ever – Year by Year Discussion

Let's break this down properly.

Starting from the early Ms. Olympia days up to the modern era — which competitor truly brought the best physique each year, regardless of who won?

Sometimes the winner isn't the one fans remember most.

Post your picks by year, and if possible include photos or comparisons. Saradas has one of the deepest archives out there — let's use it.

This is a fun (and dangerous 😄) rabbit hole—because once you separate "winner" from "best physique," a lot of those Olympia results look very different in hindsight.

I won't run every single year (yet), but here's a solid starting stretch to get the discussion going:

1980 – Rachel McLish
Hard to argue here. Not the most muscular by later standards, but she defined the look the sport was rewarding at the time—balanced, athletic, and marketable.

1981 – Kike Elomaa (controversial pick)
Ritva is the official winner, but Kike had a slightly sharper, more athletic look that some fans still prefer.

1982 – Carla Dunlap
Complete package—symmetry, presentation, and just enough muscle for the era. One of the least controversial "best of the night" calls.

1983 – Carla Dunlap vs. Rachel McLish
I lean Carla again. Rachel was polished, but Carla's physique had more depth and balance onstage.

1984 – Cory Everson
Clear. This is where the "modern" standard really starts forming.

1985 – Cory Everson
Again, hard to go against her—arguably one of her most aesthetic looks.

1986 – Bev Francis (underrated pick)
Cory wins, but Bev's muscularity was already on another level. Not as polished, but if you judge purely on development, she stands out.

1987 – Erika Geisen or Bev Francis
This is where it gets messy. Cory wins again, but a lot of fans felt Erika brought a more balanced physique, while Bev was pushing mass further than anyone.

1988 – Bev Francis
Conditioning + size combo that was ahead of its time. Judging just wasn't ready to reward it.

1989 – Bev Francis
This is one of the biggest "robberies" discussions ever. Ultra-conditioned, most muscular on stage—just didn't fit the judging ideal.

1990 – Lenda Murray
Game-changer. Size, shape, and flow—this is the blueprint for the next decade.

1991 – Lenda Murray
Even better than '90. Fuller and more dominant.

1992 – Lenda Murray vs. Anja Schreiner
Tough one. Anja wins officially, but I'd still go Lenda on overall impact and structure.

1993 – Lenda Murray
Peak dominance era.

1994 – Lenda Murray vs. Kim Chizevsky
I lean Lenda, but Kim starts pushing conditioning and density into a new zone.

1995 – Kim Chizevsky
This is where Kim really separates—grainy, dense, and complete.

1996 – Kim Chizevsky
No debate. One of the most dominant physiques ever.

1997 – Kim Chizevsky
Arguably her peak—size + conditioning sweet spot.

1998 – Kim Chizevsky
Not always talked about, but still extremely hard to beat.

1999 – Iris Kyle (early glimpse)
Kim wins, but Iris starts showing what's coming—arguably not "best yet," but worth mentioning.

2000 – Andrulla Blanchette
Great combination of size and shape; more aesthetic than the ultra-mass look.

2001 – Juliette Bergmann
Comeback story aside—really well-balanced physique for the era.

2002 – Valentina Chepiga
Conditioning monster. Maybe not the most aesthetic, but incredibly complete.

2003 – Iris Kyle
Beginning of a new dynasty.

2004 – Iris Kyle
Improved conditioning and density.

2005 – Yaxeni Oriquen-Garcia (debatable)
Iris wins, but Yaxeni's shape and fullness made this one close for a lot of fans.

2006 – Iris Kyle
More refined, fewer weaknesses.

2007 – Iris Kyle
Dominant, though Yaxeni still pushes her on shape.

2008 – Iris Kyle
Complete package.

2009 – Iris Kyle
One of her best—size + conditioning + control.

2010 – Iris Kyle
Hard, full, and dominant.

I'll stop there before this turns into a full encyclopedia 😄

A couple of themes jump out:

• Bev Francis ('86–'89) is probably the biggest "ahead of her time" case.
• Lenda redefined the ideal, not just winning but resetting the standard.
• Kim vs. Iris shows the shift from extreme density to a more complete (but still massive) look.
• Judging criteria changes explain a lot of these "snubs."

Would love to see people fill in:

• Late 2010s / Wings of Strength era
• Or go deeper on specific controversial years ('88, '89, '92 especially)

And if anyone has Saradas comparisons from '88–'89 Bev vs. Cory lineups, that would really take this thread to another level.

Not totally agree with 1993. I think Denise Rutkowski was by far the best physique, not only at the Olympia, but the year
