Sisterly Love

Inspired by classic cartoon-style family comedy

The second the front door closed behind their parents, Billy grinned.

Sixteen-year-old Billy Turner considered himself king of the house whenever Mom and Dad went out. His younger brother Spike usually acted as loyal assistant.

Their twelve-year-old sister Kit disagreed completely.

Dad's final words still echoed through the hallway.

"Billy's in charge tonight. No fighting. No trouble."

"Especially you three together," Mom added suspiciously.

"Relax," Billy had replied with fake innocence.

The instant the car disappeared down the street, Spike smacked Kit lightly on the shoulder.

"Move it, runt."

Kit glared at him. "You guys are unbelievable."

Billy stretched dramatically and flexed his arm. "Respect your elders."

"You mean your ego," Kit shot back.

Spike burst out laughing.

The boys had changed a lot lately. Billy spent nearly every afternoon lifting weights in the basement, while Spike copied everything his older brother did. Their room looked more like a gym than a bedroom.

And they never stopped talking about muscles.

"Check this out," Billy said proudly, rolling up his sleeve.

His bicep bulged impressively as he flexed.

Spike whistled. "Man, that's huge."

Kit rolled her eyes. "Congratulations. You discovered protein powder."

Billy frowned. "You're just jealous."

"Of what? Spending two hours flexing in mirrors?"

Spike nearly choked laughing.

Billy pointed dramatically toward the kitchen.

"You know what your problem is? You need discipline."

Kit folded her arms. "I need better brothers."

"Wrong answer," Spike said.

Ten minutes later, Kit found herself trapped at the kitchen table while Billy and Spike argued over snacks.

"Protein bars?"

"Too expensive."

"Peanut butter?"

"Already ate it."

Kit sighed loudly. "You two share one brain cell."

Spike snapped his fingers suddenly.

"Wait! Spinach!"

Billy looked confused. "What?"

"You know. Like Popeye!"

Kit groaned immediately. "No. Absolutely not."

But Spike was already digging through the pantry triumphantly.

"Found some!"

Billy burst out laughing. "Perfect."

"This is so dumb," Kit muttered.

"Eat your spinach," Billy announced dramatically, "and maybe someday you'll grow muscles too."

Kit crossed her arms stubbornly.

"No chance."

Spike leaned closer. "Scared?"

Kit grabbed the can instantly.

"Oh please."

She scooped out an enormous bite just to prove them wrong.

The boys erupted into applause.

"There! Feel stronger already?" Billy teased.

Kit swallowed—and suddenly paused.

"...Actually..."

The kitchen chair creaked.

Billy blinked.

Spike blinked harder.

Kit stared down at her arm.

"What the—"

Her sleeve tightened.

Then tightened more.

Muscle visibly expanded beneath the fabric.

Spike's jaw dropped.

Billy slowly backed away.

"Nope," he whispered. "I don't like this."

Kit stood up.

The chair snapped apart beneath her.

The boys screamed simultaneously.

Kit flexed experimentally.

A massive bicep swelled upward.

"Oh," she said slowly. "OH THIS IS AWESOME."

Billy pointed accusingly at Spike.

"YOU SAID ONE CAN!"

"How was I supposed to know?!" Spike yelled back.

Kit grinned.

For the first time all evening, the boys looked nervous.

Very nervous.

She cracked her knuckles.

"So..." Kit said sweetly, "who's the weakling now?"

Billy turned toward the hallway.

"RUN."

The chase lasted exactly twelve seconds.

Spike tried hiding behind the couch.

Kit lifted the entire couch.

Billy attempted to lock himself in the bathroom.

Kit accidentally pulled the doorknob off.

At one point Spike actually climbed onto the refrigerator screaming, "SHE'S A SUPERHERO!"

Eventually both boys collapsed on the living room carpet, exhausted.

Kit stood over them with crossed arms.

"You done acting like jerks?"

"Yes," Billy gasped immediately.

"Absolutely yes," Spike added.

Kit nodded.

"Good."

Then she flexed one more time just because she could.

The front door opened.

Mom and Dad stepped inside carrying takeout bags.

The house was destroyed.

The couch was upside down.

A refrigerator magnet was somehow embedded in the ceiling.

Billy and Spike looked like they'd survived a tornado.

And Kit sat calmly in the middle of the room eating spinach straight from the can.

Dad blinked once.

"...Should we even ask?"

Kit smiled innocently.

"Boys were being immature."

Mom slowly handed Dad the car keys.

"We're going back out."
