Today’s Competitors Would Beat the 90s – Agree or Not?

Strip away nostalgia.

If you put:

- Today's top competitors

  vs

- 90s legends

Under the same judging panel today...

Who actually wins?

Are modern physiques objectively better — or not?

If we're being honest and judging them under today's criteria, then yeah—modern competitors probably win more often than not.

But that doesn't mean they're "better" across the board.

Why modern physiques would win today:

• Conditioning standards are higher (hardness + detail expected every time)
• More muscle overall without completely losing shape
• Peaking is more consistent—fewer off looks at the top level

Put a current Olympia lineup next to most 90s lineups under today's judging, and the judges likely reward:
→ more density
→ sharper conditioning
→ fuller muscle bellies

But here's what the 90s had:

• Flow and structure that's hard to replicate
• Less "forced" size—more natural proportions
• A look that many would still call more aesthetic and timeless

And this is the key point people miss:

👉 Judging criteria decides the winner—not just the physiques themselves.

If you flip it:

• Judge today's athletes by 90s standards, and a lot of them get marked down for being:
  • too dense
  • too hard
  • slightly blockier in flow

So the real answer is:

• Under today's judging → modern athletes win
• Under 90s judging → 90s physiques win more often

It's not evolution in a straight line—it's adaptation to what gets rewarded.

The interesting question is:
Which look actually represents the "best" version of bodybuilding—not just the one that wins?

That's where opinions really split.

90's is better. But yeah if you can only judge by today's standards only today's athletes can win. Id say it's a losing criteria though.
