Part 1 - Enemy at The Gates

The Second World War. The deadliest armed conflict in history, which ended with more than fifty million victims. We all have studied the course of it, be it to a lesser or greater degree, and it's well known that some of the bloodiest battles were fought on the eastern front. This means talking, of course, about the counteroffensive of the Red Army on the Nazi Germany, but not the way we've been told so far. It's true that the victory of the Soviet Union was possible thanks to the courage of many men, but some women had something to do with it as well, or in this case, a woman. What many don't know is that the victory wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't precisely because of a woman: Soviet Superwoman. This is her story.

October 1942. The great comrade Stalin is in his office, sat at his desk and smoking his characteristic pipe. He had many papers in front of him, so it seems that he was busy with something most interesting.

"Well... Let's see who can we execute today..." said Stalin while observing the papers.

But while he was distracted looking at the papers, something that made him stop happened. Suddenly, he heard how something big broke his window glass, quickly entering the office, like a shooting star. The truth is that she could be described as such, although she also had something human, and one that the leader knew well.

"Comrade Yezhov. When I said you could come here, I meant you to do it through the door like everyone else, not the window" said Stalin while looking at Olga.

"Ah...! I'm sorry, comrade Stalin. The truth is that I was a little late, so I decided to come flying, and you know... I don't control it too well yet..." said Olga, visibly ashamed.

"Don't worry about the glass. I'll send someone to fix it, or else I'll send him to gulag... Anyway, we have more important things to worry about, come with me" said Stalin while turning around.

Without a second thought, our leading lady followed her leader to the other side of the room. Once there, the latter pointed at a big map that was on the wall, which contained what looked like tactical orders of some kind. Olga knew what they meant, but she decided that the best would be to let him explain.

"Well, comrade Yezhov. As you know, our Motherland is being invaded by the Germans, and between you and me, but the picture is not good for us. They even reached the city you see on the map, which has my name: Stalingrad. Nonetheless, our troops are doing as much as they can so they don't get further, but I'm afraid it won't be enough. We need to change tactics" explained Stalin while pointing at the map.

"What's the mission, comrade?" asked Olga with determination.

"It seems that the Germans had decided to relocate a great part of their troops. We're aware that many of the battalions that headed towards here have been stationed there, so they probably have a purpose in that city. We're going to take advantage of this and do the same. I'm going to send part of our resources there, or better said, our best resource: you. I want you to go to Stalingrad" said Stalin while pointing at Olga.

We complain that the exams of today are hard, but sending you to defend Stalingrad on your first days of work wasn't a small thing. Even so, our leading lady didn't hesitate for a second to nod her head to that order, but she thought that it would be good to have some more information, since she didn't know the place well.

"When you get there, I want you to go to the forest located in the eastern part of the city. Someone's waiting for you there, and he'll give you instructions. I think I don't have to say this: it's imperative that the enemy doesn't see you any moment, but how you do it, is up to you. Good luck, and good trip. You can leave through the window" said Stalin while sitting at his desk.

As soon as he said that, our leading lady bowed to apologize again, and then she flew out the window, heading to her destination. What neither she nor her leader suspected was that, at that very moment, there was another person who was also on a mission, although it wasn't the Red Army in this case, but the enemy.

Outside of town, a German soldier had been sent on a recon mission. He drives a motorcycle with a sidecar, although he doesn't carry anyone next to him. But despite that, the snow prevents him from going fast and limits his visibility. Therefore, he decides to stop for a moment to observe the area with his binoculars, and what he manages to see leaves him a bit surprised.

"Wait... Is that...? It can't be..." said the soldier in a low voice.

It seemed incredible, but there it was. In the distance, he could see what looked like a red star on top of a building, which was from the Spasskaya Tower. But that wasn't the only thing he saw, because while he was observing the place, he was also able to see something flying over the city nearby, although it was so fast that he couldn't distinguish what it was.

"A shooting star? That explains my lucky day" said the soldier while smiling.

Knowing that it wouldn't be wise to get closer, the soldier got on his motorcycle again and went back through the same way he came. He had a long road ahead, just like our leading lady, who was traveling in the opposite direction.

Olga decided that the best thing would be to fly surrounding the eastern part of the city, because it was the safest area and she would avoid being spotted by the enemy that way, or at least by more enemies. She had the advantage of not being recognized by that soldier for now, so she didn't worry about it too much and continued her route.

Finally, after many minutes in the air, our superheroine sighted the city of Stalingrad. Just like her leader told her, she had to meet her contact in a secluded area, in a forest that was a little further to be precise, which didn't take long for her to reach. She put herself above it and landed slowly, placing her feet on the ground.

Once there, she glanced both ways to observe the place. The forest was completely covered in snow, but there wasn't anything remarkable apart from that. That was precisely the problem, that there was nobody there, not even her contact. The first thing Olga thought was that maybe he was lost, or maybe he had been set up. However, and considering that she might be walking into a trap herself, she thought that the best thing would be to move and start looking for him.

Our leading lady walked around for a while, but she wasn't able to find anybody. Not that she was tired, since she had some long and muscular legs, but there was a moment when she stopped to think what to do next. But she didn't have much time for that, because right when she did, she could hear the sound of a gun on her back.

"Hands up" said a male voice behind Olga.

In this situation, any of us would've done what he said. But our leading lady didn't, for two reasons: she was a brave woman, and she couldn't show weakness either. That without considering that she had a mission to complete, and she wasn't going to leave it just because someone said it, even less that way.

When she heard that man's voice, Olga realized something that caught her attention: he had Russian accent, so it was unlikely that he was the enemy. Therefore, she decided to speak to see if she could calm him down.

"There's nothing to worry about, comrade" said Olga in a calm tone.

As soon as she finished that sentence, our leading lady was able to notice how the gun that was pointing at her moved along with the man. She heard his footsteps on the snow and around her, until the man finally got in front of her, all that without leaving the gun.

When he got before her, both could see each other better. The man observed Olga through his gun, being able to see her in detail. A big woman, nearly two meters tall, with short black hair, accompanied by some pretty blue eyes. But the most striking thing was her body: she was wearing some kind of grey costume, with a pair of boots and matching gloves, apart from the long red cape on her back. The outfit allowed to clearly see her great and well-defined musculature, especially in that pose, standing strong.

About the man, not that there was anything remarkable of him. He was wearing a soldier uniform from the Red Army, one of those that Olga had already seen, apart from a ushanka on his head. The latter had the symbol of the sickle and the hammer on the front, just like Olga had on her chest, so when he saw it, the man knew that he could trust her. He slowly lowered his weapon and took his finger off the trigger.

"They told me they were sending reinforcements, but they didn't mention she was so big... and pretty" said the soldier with a smile.

Our leading lady couldn't help but blush when she heard that, but she didn't know that man yet and she wanted to appear strong in front of him, so she tried to hide her feeling. She just stood still and tried to change the subject for a more important one, which was why she was there actually.

"My name is Olga, and my mission is to assist in the defense of Stalingrad. I had to meet someone here, who would give me instructions. You know what I mean, right?" asked Olga with determination.

"Well... My job is killing Nazis, but it'll be a pleasure to leave it for a moment and be your local guide. Nikolai, at your service" said the soldier while bowing.

As soon as he said that, the man turned around and got ready to take Olga to her destination. He made a gesture with his hand so she would follow him, and both of them began to walk through the snow. While doing so, she thought that it wouldn't hurt to know more about his new companion, so she took an interest in his job.

"What do you do exactly, Nikolai? What's your role in the Red Army?" asked Olga.

"I'm a sniper, and not to brag, but one of the best. This little friend here is Mosin-Nagant, and I always keep it with me. Mosin, be nice and say hello to our guest" said Nikolai while moving the rifle.

The first impression of our leading lady was that, besides looking kind, that man had sense of humor. Maybe it didn't seem like much, but it was much appreciated, even more in wartimes. But apart from that, she could also notice that he was determined, and that even with the size difference between them, he didn't seem scared of her. His voice wasn't trembling either, and seen that he almost shoots her before, he looked like a brave man.

"I've been told that the war is getting complicated. You're not afraid of the enemy?" asked Olga, intrigued.

"To be honest, I think it's them who should be afraid. And now that you're here, no doubt that they'll have something else to worry about, haha" answered Nikolai while laughing.

After chatting for a while, our leading lady began to feel comfortable with the man. She thought that it would be logical to tell him a bit about her, but her leader ordered that she had to stay as hidden as possible, so she decided to extend that concept even to those with whom she was going to fight. Maybe that changed in the future, but Nikolai still had a lot to prove, although it wouldn't take long for him to do it.

Meanwhile, away from all that, the German soldier we mentioned continued his route. Just like our leading lady, he had his own mission, which would end when he reached his destination. He was driving his motorcycle for a good while, but since the route he took was relatively safe, he had no problem on the way, and even less considering who were waiting for him.

The soldier had a large structure in front of him, which he recognized as soon as he saw it. It was surrounded by barbed wire, and the entrance was watched over by a barrier and a guard, who made him stop as soon as he arrived. He approached and began to speak with him.

"Papers, please" said the guard while standing on one side of the motorcycle.

"Very funny. I must inform the Kommandant, you know where she is?" asked the soldier.

"She's waiting for you in her office, so don't be late. You can park the motorcycle at the usual place, I made sure nobody took the place" answered the guard while pointing at the door.

"Good work, and thanks" said the soldier while starting the motorcycle again.

"Remember to speak well of me to the Kommandant!" shouted the guard while the soldier was entering the base.

The soldier parked the motorcycle on his usual place, just like the guard indicated. He stopped the engine, got off and picked up his stuff, taking it with him inside the base. While he was walking down, many soldiers who were in there saluted him, since they all knew each other at this point. But among all of them, the soldier had to meet the most important one, who was the boss in the base.

After a while, the soldier arrived at the office. Since he was very polite, he knocked the door a couple of times and waited until a voice from the inside gave him permission to enter. He had already been in that place, but since he wasn't used to places like this, the decoration of it always impressed him: a big office, with many propaganda posters of the Wehrmacht on the walls and a portrait of the Führer on the middle, wearing his characteristic brown coat. Under him, there was a large mahogany table, but the most important thing was who was behind it: the commander.

The soldier approached her slowly, stepping on the long and expensive carpet that was on the floor. The commander turned around to meet him.

"Heil Hitler!" exclaimed the soldier while raising his hand.

"Heil Hitler. Rest, soldier. What news do you bring from the front?" asked the commander.

The intention of the soldier was to answer that question, but as soon as his commander turned around, he couldn't help but go mute for a few seconds. This was due to the complexion of the woman, which imposed because of how pretty she was. She had blonde hair, short and a bit curly, which went well with her bright blue eyes. Apart from that, her long lashes called the attention, just like her fleshy lips. And he was just seeing her face, but even if she had her uniform on, he could appreciate that she was slender, and with some firm breasts. Her height was also noticeable, especially with the high heeled boots she was wearing. To sum up: she was devilishly beautiful.

"Is something wrong, soldier? I thought I told you to inform me" said the commander in a serious tone.

"Ah...! I'm sorry, mein Kommandant. The truth is that I wanted to tell you something important. I saw it, with my own eyes" said the soldier, a little embarrassed.

"Be more precise. What did you see?" asked the commander.

Instead of answering her, the soldier decided that the best would be to show it to her. He opened his bag and took out some photos, which were not of good quality, but they would serve to explain better what he had to say. In them, it appeared what he had seen through the binoculars before.

"Wait, this is... The Spasskaya Tower? Impossible..." said the commander, surprised.

"I'm afraid it is, mein Kommandant" claimed the soldier.

The woman looked at the photos with attention for a few seconds and then she looked at the ceiling, as if she was thinking of something. Lastly, she left the photos on her table, suggesting that they had been of use and that she pretended to do something with them.

"Well done, soldier. I must inform Berlin about this now, and you can be sure that I'll put in a good word for you. You can go, take the rest of the day off" said the commander while pointing at the door.

Without a second thought, the soldier bowed his head in gratitude for those words and prepared to leave the room. But right when he was about to open the door, her commander stopped him again.

"Before you leave... What's your name, soldier?" asked the woman.

"Hans, mein Kommandant. Hans Bauer" answered the man.

"Good. From now on, I'll address you by your first name, and I want you to do the same. Call me Ilsa, please" said the woman in a calm tone.

"Of course, mein Komman... I mean, Ilsa" said the soldier, a bit nervous.

It seems that Hans did something good. He managed not only that his boss knew his name, but also that he could call her by her own. He still didn't know what would it mean in the future, but that your commander put in a good word with the high command was supposed to be a good thing... at least in part. He would worry about finding out, when he was less nervous.

While Hans decided to use his free time to take a well-deserved rest, far from there, our leading lady and her new partner reached their destination. It was a small cliff on the east side of the Volga river, from where they could clearly see the area, both the city of Stalingrad and the shore where they were. At this point, the man went on to explain what was planned.

"Look, comrade Olga. Our army is getting ready to launch a major offensive against the Germans" said Nikolai while pointing at the troops.

The superheroine was able to observe in detail the landscape in front of her. She could see how a lot of men, most of them very young, received instructions from the commissars. At the same time, many boats were getting ready to transport them to the other side of the river, and there were many Katyusha vehicles behind them, whose members were loading their rockets. They seemed well prepared, but our leading lady realized a detail.

"I see that the ones crossing the river are not carrying any weapon. How are they going to defend once they get there?" asked Olga.

"That's because the guns are waiting for them at the other side. As far as I know, they'll also have food, water and a lot of ammunition available. Doesn't look like we have to worry about it" answered Nikolai.

But contrary to what she thought, the worries were about to start, and they wouldn't be few. As soon as he said that, both of them saw how the commissars gave the order to attack, so the boats began to cross the river in bulk. What nobody there had into account was that, while doing so, many Stuka planes appeared on the horizon, ready to hunt anybody who tried to reach the other side.

"This is not good, comrade. We don't have anti-air ammunition to support our troops, and even less planes. How are we going to stop this massacre?" wondered Nikolai, worried.

At that moment, our leading lady knew what she had to do. It was precisely in occasions like this when she must offer her support, so she didn't hesitate to answer his partner.

"I'll do it... That's my duty" said Olga with determination.

The man had it clear that the size and musculature of the superheroine would be useful, but even so, he didn't know how she was going to face the German air force by herself. He stared at her with a surprised face, and then he saw something that he didn't expect.

Suddenly, Nikolai observed how the woman he had in front of her was getting taller. At first, he thought that she was on her toes, but when he looked at the ground to check it out, he saw that it was something much more amazing. The superheroine was levitating, and she went higher by the second, with the head of the man following her movement and looking at her with his eyes wide open.

"Ready for battle, comrade?" asked Olga with a smile.

"Comrade Olga is flying, and I'm not drunk yet... I couldn't be more ready!" answered Nikolai with joy.

Since he didn't have his own boat, our leading lady offered to carry Nikolai to the other side. But for her surprise, the latter rejected her offer.

"There's no time, comrade. Take care of those planes, I'll make sure to get to the other side" said Nikolai.

"And how are you planning to do that? Swimming?" asked Olga with irony.

"I took baths in colder lakes than this when I was a kid in Siberia. Here I come, comrades!" exclaimed Nikolai while jumping into the water.

Without a second thought, the man dived into the water and began to swim to the other shore. His partner still didn't believe that he had so much initiative, but that was precisely what her army needed, and she wasn't going to be less. Therefore, she turned around and set her sights on the planes that were approaching, flying towards them at the same time, and who seemed to be eager to start the battle.

"Let's show the power of the Luftwaffe to these Bolsheviks" said one of the pilots on the radio.

The situation was not good. The Stuka bombers had almost reached the river, and they outnumbered our leading lady. But she wouldn't let them do what they wanted just because of that, the objective was to save as many people as possible, and fast.

Olga headed towards the planes like a lightning, which saw her coming right away. Maybe she caught them by surprise, but who ruled the fleet quickly gave instructions to stop her.

"The half on the front deal with the unidentified flying object, and the other half on the back deal with the boats. For the Reich!" exclaimed the pilot.

As soon as he gave that order, the bombers on the back flew down and headed towards the boats. Olga had to chose now, but her choice was clear: she would go after the lower ones first, to save as many lives as possible.

With no time to waste, the superheroine quickly launched herself at the first plane. Seeing that the latter pretended to hit her directly, she turned to her left and firmly grabbed the wing, taking it with her and causing the pilot to lose the balance, who ended up crashing the plane in the water, right behind Nikolai.

"That was close, comrade" said Nikolai while swimming faster.

One less, but there were still several left. While she was dealing with the first plane, both Olga and her comrades could see how the rest literally destroyed some of the boats, with their members inside. But if she wanted to save the rest, she couldn't stand there gazing, she had to continue her mission.

It seems that it was the turn for one of the Stuka coming for her now, who decided to throw himself with great speed. In fact, it was so fast that our leading lady almost couldn't avoid it, just putting herself under it and holding it with her muscular arms not to lose her balance. The thing is that, while doing so, she could see how another one of the planes was shooting his machine guns at the boats, spreading panic among her comrades. They were so frightened that many of them tried to jump into the water to escape from that hell, but the commissars traveling with them wouldn't allow it, shooting them on the spot.

"Kill the cowards, shoot the traitors!" yelled the commissar while shooting at the water.

The problem that Olga had was double, because even if she stopped the planes from killing her comrades, other were trying to defect and were executed by their superiors. She had to put an end to that situation as quick as possible, so she diced to take action once again.

Taking advantage that she was holding one of the planes, our leading lady thought: what if I kill two birds with one stone? Then, she began to flex her big and muscular arms backwards, increasing her strength, until she finally managed to stop the Stuka above her. Once she did, she took impulse, aimed at one of the other Stuka and threw it with incredible force, hitting it and causing both of them to crash. The impact made the pieces fly into the air, and some of them ended up next to her partner, almost touching his ushanka to be precise.

"Hey, this isn't funny anymore! Be more careful, comrade!" shouted Nikolai from the water.

After seeing that she almost blows his head, Olga put her hands together and made a gesture to her partner to apologize, since she didn't have the intention to hurt him. On the contrary, her duty was to save lives, so she had to get back to work immediately, without worrying about anything else but what was coming next.

"I've had enough of this. I'm not losing any more planes. For the Führer!" exclaimed the pilot.

As soon as he said that, Olga observed how the leader of the feet headed towards her. At first, she thought that he would be crazy enough to crash down on her, but nothing is further from reality. What he pretended was to gun her down, she was sure of it when she saw the machine guns of the plane aiming at her.

Without time to lose, our superheroine crossed her muscular arms to protect herself, causing the bullets to bounce off her biceps and forearms. The pilot, after seeing that his ammunition had no effect on her, raised the flight and went over her, dodging her for very little.

"That's impossible... Everyone, retreat immediately!" exclaimed the chief pilot.

Olga was able to see how the plain turned around, with the intention of fleeing the battle. But after what he did, she wasn't willing to left him escape.

"Oh no, not a chance. You're not going anywhere" said Olga while staring at the plane.

Without time to waste, our leading lady flew at full speed to follow the pilot, and in fact, it didn't take her more than a few seconds to catch him. To stop him, she decided to do something similar to what she did before, but in a different way this time: she put both hands one the tail of the Stuka, flexed her big and muscular arms backwards and made it stop in mid-air, what surprised who was inside.

"What's wrong with this thing, why did it stop!?" exclaimed the pilot, visibly nervous.

Then, the man looked back and saw something that left him totally amazed. There was the superheroine, firmly holding the plane, but calm at the same time. He stared at her, and when the great woman saw how scared he was, she decided that it was the time to finish this.

"You sure are going to fly now!" shouted Olga with determination.

As soon as she said that, our leading lady squeezed her fingers, took impulse and began to spin the plane around her, as if it was a spinning top. After a few seconds like that, and trying not to get dizzy, she released the plane and threw it with strength towards one of the mountains at the other side of the river. The pilot, who was experienced, was fast and shot out from the cabin, opening the parachute in the process. And good thing he did, because the plane ended up crashing and becoming a fireball.

There was only one Stuka in the air, but unfortunately, its pilot received the order from his boss and took advantage that Olga was distracted to escape, so he couldn't be seen anywhere. Our leading lady couldn't do much more there, so now it was the turn of her partner, who just reached the other shore and was resting while he was waiting for her. But for his surprise, the first person to land wasn't her, but the pilot, who fell right next to him.

"Fascists are falling from the sky. Today is my lucky day, haha!" said Nikolai while pointing at him with his rifle.

Despite the cold, the thing had started hot for them, both for the sniper and Olga. But that was just the beginning, because there was still a lot of war ahead, and the next battle would be there soon.
