Good comment Nicolai.  There's little doubt that North America, and mainly the US has, when it comes to the women's side of the sport and in the space of 30 years, gone from the non-existent to the sublime at times, to the ridiculous and back to what they think is sublime today but is in fact not worth much.  Unlike the Ms Olympia its just not worth killing off as it has a commercial following to some extent.  What is getting recognition and rewards now in the US due to their federations dictating standards, (also around the rest of the world): extreme definition (which won the women no kudos from the general public in the past but is now being vigorously promoted) combined with underdevelopment and a pretty face..........  The whole thing is a blend of "mess meets pageant".  Mess, because there are four different divisions within the women's sport in most federations (IFBB, NABBA, WPF, WBF, WFF etc) that all sound (and are) too similar to be of any use as a development guideline for the athlete.   Figure, toned figure, beach body, wellness, fitness...if it weren't so directionless it would less be insulting to them.  Now athletes just hope they are pretty and ripped enough (heaven help them if they have too much muscle) to fit into one of the categories and make it through to a finals in one of the top 6 or 7 national amateur qualifier shows.  Brazil is the only country with their heads screwed on, eschewing all influences and directives from elsewhere and doing things (at least to a large extent) their way.

As for the non-competitive Brazilian athletes and gym goers, they simply have the smarts to have figured out what guys want and then seen that its pretty fantastic anyway!!  So there is this movement there to get into shape, and look incredible without  just "doing this because my boy friend/husband want s me too" but because 'she' wants to.... and knows she is more marketable looking superb than looking like a sack of laundry.  It's really as simple as that.   Any idea that they are simple-minded does not apply - these young ladies are also smart, well educated and career oriented, from all walks of life.  And for all the naysayers out there - especially women outside Latin America - they should get this into their heads:  There are far more British, American, German and South African men (just to snap up a random four) checking out the Brazilian girls on the net than there are Brazilian men looking at webpages filled with American, British, SA or German girls.  It's just a raw and inescapable fact.
