Summer Rivalry

It was the hottest summer anyone in town could remember. The air shimmered above the pavement, the pool water glowed bright blue under the evening sun, and Charlie was exhausted from a full day out with friends.

At eighteen, he considered himself far too mature to spend time at his younger sister's birthday gathering. Becky had turned sixteen the week before and had begged their parents for a pool party. Charlie expected the event to be over by the time he got home.

He parked his father's old convertible in the driveway and listened.

No music. No splashing. No shouting.

Perfect.

He loosened the collar of his sweater and headed around the back of the house, already thinking about jumping into the pool.

Then he stopped.

Four girls sat around the picnic table near the patio. Becky was there with three of her closest friends: Belinda, Jenny, and Jane.

And they were arm wrestling.

Charlie blinked.

He watched silently as Becky leaned forward, smiling confidently while her opponent strained with both feet planted firmly against the bench. After a few tense seconds, Becky calmly pushed the girl's hand to the tabletop.

The others erupted in cheers.

Charlie couldn't help laughing.

"What on earth is going on?" he called.

The girls turned.

Becky grinned immediately. "Tournament."

Charlie shook his head. "Arm wrestling? Really?"

"What's wrong with that?" asked Belinda.

Charlie shrugged. "Nothing, I guess. Just seems like a weird competition for girls."

Every face around the table changed instantly.

Becky stood up.

Charlie hadn't seen much of her over the last two years because of boarding school, and the difference caught him off guard. She had grown taller—almost eye level with him—and carried herself with surprising confidence. Even through her light jacket, her athletic build was obvious.

"Careful," she warned playfully. "You're starting to sound very old-fashioned."

Charlie smirked. "I'm just saying arm wrestling usually favors strength."

"And?"

"And guys are usually stronger."

The entire table burst out laughing.

Becky folded her arms. "You really believe that?"

"Well... yeah."

Without a word, Becky rolled up one sleeve.

Charlie's smile faded.

Her arm wasn't bulky in an exaggerated way, but it was undeniably strong. Defined muscle tightened along her upper arm and shoulder as she flexed casually.

"Gym training," she said. "Three times a week."

Belinda laughed. "You should see her at competitions."

Charlie suddenly felt far less confident.

Still, pride got the better of him.

"I work out too," he replied.

"Oh?" Becky said with obvious amusement. "Then maybe you should join the tournament."

The other girls immediately began encouraging him.

Charlie tried to laugh it off, but Becky had already pulled out a chair opposite hers.

"Come on, big brother," she teased. "Show us how it's done."

Charlie hesitated.

Part of him wanted to walk away.

The other part didn't want to look afraid.

Finally, he sat down.

The girls gathered around the table as Charlie and Becky locked hands.

"Ready?" asked Jenny.

Charlie nodded.

"Go!"

The pressure hit instantly.

Charlie expected to overpower her immediately.

Instead, Becky's arm barely moved.

His smile disappeared.

She wasn't struggling.

She was testing him.

Charlie pushed harder. His shoulder tightened. His forearm trembled.

Becky still held steady.

"Come on," she said lightly. "I thought you worked out."

The girls laughed.

Charlie gave everything he had.

Nothing.

Then Becky slowly increased pressure.

Charlie watched in disbelief as his own arm began drifting backward.

"No way..." he muttered.

Becky grinned.

With steady control, she pushed his hand down to the table.

The patio exploded with cheers.

Charlie leaned back in stunned silence.

Becky flexed her arm dramatically while the others applauded.

"Good match," she said.

Charlie shook his head, half embarrassed and half impressed.

"You got seriously strong."

"Told you," Becky replied.

Belinda stepped forward next.

"My turn."

Charlie stared at the group.

For the first time in his life, he realized he may have badly underestimated all of them.

And judging by their smiles, the tournament was only getting started.
