Big old Biceps

It was an ordinary Saturday evening in the small terraced house on the edge of the housing estate.

The curtains were already drawn, only the old floor lamp with the yellowish shade was lit in the living room, and from the kitchen came the soft clatter of two cups that Helga placed on a tray.

Helga was 68, Walter 71. They had been married for 44 years. Most people in the village said about her, "Helga, she's gotten quite plump in recent years." And Walter would always just smile politely and change the subject. What people didn't see—and never would—was what was actually going on beneath the baggy cardigans and comfortable blouses with the three buttons on the sleeve.

Helga put down the tray and, with a small groan, sank into her armchair. Walter was already sitting in the armchair opposite her, his reading glasses perched on the tip of his nose, pretending to read the newspaper. But his eyes kept wandering back to her arms.

"Should I loosen your shoulders?" she asked suddenly, without looking at him.

Walter put the newspaper aside. A small, almost shy smile crossed his face.

"Actually... I wanted to ask you if you... well..."

She knew exactly what he meant. The game between them had been going on for decades and had never needed a name.

Helga leaned back slowly, pushing up the sleeves of her blouse—first the left, then the right. The skin was soft, round, crisscrossed with pale stretch marks like fine silver threads. But underneath...

She made her right fist, very slowly, almost with relish. Her forearm tensed, tendons bulged. And then came the moment that Walter experienced every time, just like the first time: Her biceps bulged. Not just a little. A real, hard, round sphere pushed its way up through the soft fat, stretching the skin taut until the fine pores and the subtle grain of the muscle fibers were visible. A biceps bulge, the kind you usually only see on much younger, athletic men.

Walter let out an audible sigh.

"Still there," he murmured, almost reverently.

"It's always been there," Helga replied calmly. Her voice had that dark, velvety undertone she only revealed in moments like these.

She'd known since her youth that she was stronger than most of the boys in her class. At 19, she'd decisively beaten her future husband at arm wrestling at the village festival—of course, only after letting him win three rounds so he could save face. She'd never made it public again after that. But Walter had seen it that evening. And he'd never forgotten how her hand had closed around his forearm—warm, soft, and yet relentless.

Helga fully extended her arm, then bent it again. The bulge rose and fell like a living being beneath her skin.

Walter slid down to his knees in front of her armchair. Very gently, he placed both hands around her right upper arm. His fingertips barely reached the curve.

"May I?"

"As if you had to ask," she whispered.

He began to massage. Not like a normal shoulder massage. His thumbs sought out the hard bulge, circled it, pressed lightly against it, felt its unyielding density. Sometimes he pressed harder, as if to test whether it was really as firm as it looked. It always was.

Helga closed her eyes and took a deep breath. That was her part of the secret: she loved the way he touched her. Not despite the soft curves, but precisely because of the contrast. The gentle, heavy fullness of her body and beneath it that hard, uncompromising strength—she knew that this very combination had driven him wild for decades. And it did. That he adored her so much. That he felt small next to her hidden strength. That he could let himself go, because she could have picked him up at any time if she'd wanted to.

Sometimes, when he kneaded her particularly intensely, she would tense her biceps a little more—just to see his eyes widen and his breath catch.

"You could still carry me around the table," he whispered hoarsely at one point.

Helga opened her eyes and looked at him. A small, knowing smile.

"And you know I would. If you asked nicely."

Walter laughed softly, shyly, happily. Then he pressed his forehead against the warm, firm bulge of her biceps, closed his eyes, and breathed in her scent—lavender shower gel, freshly baked rolls from that morning, and something that was simply Helga.

And so they sat there, in the yellow light of the old lamp, two old people with a secret no one would ever guess.

Sometimes the strongest hug is the one you never see.
