I definitely appreciate the power of the CrossFit women and they are muscular too. Still, I think that the CrossFit girls aren't nearly as symmetrical and the female physique competitors or even the bodybuilders for that matter. Thus, on that basis I believe the bodybuilders have the edge when it comes to looks.

I don't know why it has to be bodybuilding vs crossfit. The two aren't mutually exclusive. But I also hold the radical view that physique competitors are also bodybuilders. My observation is that the more muscular the woman, the more likely she's doing things in the realm of traditional bodybuilding training/diet/lifestyle. I work out in an MMA gym, and I see it there. We have crossfit type classes. The regular looking women take the class and leave. And they do get into great shape. But the ones with visible muscle inevitably spend some time before or after class on the weight side.

After all these decades, I still don't understand what motivates women to be competitive bodybuilders. It's an extreme choice, and the stories I've heard are all different. There are a couple who had never touched a weight before, saw someone like Lenda Murray in a magazine, and it captivated their imagination. But the majority picked up weights for different reasons, and a small percentage of them get drawn into the bodybuilding community.

I view crossfit as another source for recruiting future female bodybuilders. And it's an important one, because it appeals to women who might be more inclined towards aerobics training, and puts a weight in their hand - and not a pink one either. Women who otherwise never would have started down the path of strength training. I look around and I see an explosion of mid-sized women, and I give crossfit a lot of the credit for that. While I'd always prefer they be bigger. I'm not going to complain about it. As others have said, the decline of bodybuilding contestants isn't related to crossfit. I tie it more to the creation of the physique class, which is a separate discussion.

^^ what he said

A friend of mind did a shoot with a crossfit woman recently. Incredible legs and abs, ripped, but not really "bodybuilder aesthetic" on the whole. She had never done a shoot before, or really flexed extensively until this. BUt she had a good time, enjoyed the shoot, enjoyed the posing. Maybe this will encourage her to bring up her arms to match her legs, which benefits us as well.

More of that kind of mindset is great. Unfortunately you probably won't get it from the top tier ones that have sponsors or are very competitive. but i've seen plenty of freaky looking physiques that aren't mainstream that certainly might be willing to at least shoot

No matter how strong and muscular the Crossfits are they don't have the diet and aesthetic view of muscle that the FBBs have.
Even offseason, the FBBs are more aesthetic looking.

Crossfitters often are also very muscular and strong ,often a bit less then BB,but therefore have really endurance
which is also quite attractive ........

Best is acombination of both ......

Awesome also ,for example ,Shannon Courtney : Growing huge FBB at first ,the switching to running, then
half way back to Crossfit /BB

Totally agreed it doesn't have to be one versus the other and I agree with your entire statement. I think the question was which do you prefer though - and in that case I prefer the symmetry of fbb.

Send me one of each and I might be able to decide.

Not an easy question to answer!

Say what you will about CrossFit, it's successfully brought lots of pretty women into the gym and convinced them to build big, functional muscles. Turning what was once a paucity of muscle women (due to beauty standards being "I don't want to look too bulky") into a virtual schmoe-gasbord. CrossFit is never going to produce a Colette Guimond -- and that's really okay. There's room in this world both for mass monsters and for sleeker, but still brawny, women.

You're right, I really didn't answer the question. I did say in general bigger is better, but it's not strictly a question of size. A lot of you have used the word "functional" to describe a crossfitter's muscles. I session and I gravitate towards FBB's, but the first crossfitter I remember meeting was a young Kourtney Olson, and I made a similar comment to her, observing that she had a physique reminiscent of ancient Greek statuary. There's an aesthetic to that which is beautiful, but doesn't have the visual impact of a full blown FBB.

I'm thinking of some other women I've met and how they'd look as FBB vs CF, and it depends on the woman. There's a lot of variation out there in terms of phenotype and muscle shape and size. Not every woman who goes all-in as an FBB comes out looking like Kashma. Some women will look better as crossfitters. Showing my age here, but back in the eighties they used to debate Stallone vs Arnold, saying Stallone didn't have the genetics to make a good BB. When it comes to FBB, we tend to think about the winners, not the women who come in last place. So while I definitely prefer the look of an elite FBB, not everyone can pull it off.

Don't recall if we've ever done this debate here, but if you go in the other direction, you get FBB's vs power-lifters. And for the purposes of this discussion, we'll assume everyone has a similar BF%. Whereas crossfitters embrace funtional strength and endurance, bodybuilders go for size and symmetry, power-lifters are all about strength. I've heard the phrase "built like a power-lifter" a couple of times in conjunction with low placings in BB competitions. Personally, that's the look I like the most. While some of the women do come off looking blocky, that kind of training also produces women like Kate Baird. They get a functional look as well. It's like muscle car vs bulldozer. Like me some bulldozer!
