Title: The WPW dresses
Post by: Pauli Christophe on June 05, 2009, 07:30:04 pm: I was doing some editing (eliminating duplicates, etc) and call me slow, but it dawned on me that Wennerstrom must have been packing around a suitcase full of dresses for quite a few years, there... Not so much now, but at one time, it seems that almost everyone was wearing the same clothes.... Particularly, the one they actually referred to as "the cinamon dress" pictured here...

Which did you prefer?

I like the gray dress (especially on Marissa Brown, Della Wagnon, and Judy Moshkovsky) better, which let you see how large their biceps were but covered in stretchable gray. It was also a miniskirt and may have been backless.

It would have been something to see the bigger girls Karla Nelsen, Tina Lockwood, etc attempt to squeeze in them. Of course, the magazine's editors no doubt didn't want the garments ripped.

Post by: NinjaStar on June 12, 2013, 09:39:03 pm: An interesting thread. To be honest I didn't really like either. They cover too much, and they look so 1980s. If I had to choose, I'd say the cinnamon because it's slightly less dated looking, and beautiful biceps shouldn't be covered up. But all an all, I like that sexy red number than Nursel Gurler wore in one of her photoshoots the best out of any outfit worn in any model in any WPW photoshoot. I would have liked to seen more of that on other ladies.

Given how many (and how large) women have worn that dress, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did (especially after Tami Wooden wore it - she looked huge!). :)

If only WPW had known how popular it would become when they bought it, then maybe they would've bought several in different sizes. I suppose when they did, they might not have realised how big female bodybuilders would get over the years.

To be 100 % honest...it belonged to Steve Wennerstrom's girlfriend. A borrowed item just for the shoot. Maybe that's why they eventually got the stretchy dresses.....

I still have an old BodyPower mag as well as some Women's Physique Publication mags from 1982-83 with the women in dresses like these. What they called their "musclecake" photos also were hamstrung by fashion. Miniskirts and minidresses didn't really come back in until late 1982, early 1983. When they did, they jumped -- the Lori Walkup photos in the first WPW with her in a blue jean mini, showing those big thighs and calves on a big girl (160 at 5-8!)...my jaw was on the floor.

Probably the thing I like best about it is it won't stay in one place and every time a women flexes she has to re-adjust it or risk popping out of it.

I know these were shot at the site of the 1990 NPC USA's....which I think were in Houston (???)
Don't know the name of the hotel but there were a ton of women shot at the same time and place.

Yup...her dress ! ...and she wasn't there to lend it to me. The guys wanted another dress for the shoot so Steve Wennerstrom opened her closet ( their closet) to me to choose. That's the one I chose ! ( It looks mighty fine on her I might add. ) No doubt the fits-all stretch dress came on the scene shortly thereafter when she saw the pics from that shoot and he might have gotten a reprimand.

I should apologize right now. I am sure sorry. I was not in my rightest of minds .

Funny you should say that. Some, Val Stauffer for example, wore it like it was made for them. Others, like Liza Larence, had a little too much superstructure for the cut of the dress to easily contain. And still others, and Hannie Van Aken is the prime example, had so much muscle they had to fight to keep it on.
