We all have our dark side, and, apparently, so does Vampirella. As preordained, she has finally found her true soul mate. Indeed, the blood ties between Vampirella and Shadowhawk are so inextricably intertwined, that the two paramours can share their most intimate thoughts and tell each other their own life stories without ever troubling to utter a single word. Yet, the animal passion that has been evoked from Vampirella's inner psyche proves infectuous and dangerous. Even worse, she and Shadowhawk have completely different agendas. Is sex and act of love or is it only lust?

As the granddaughter of Harrison Cardwell, founder of the very industry that threatens to destroy the Amazon, Rachel Cardwell, aka Sheena, enjoys an affluent lifestyle and a valuable opportunity to learn how to be civilized. Nevertheless, she doesn't stray too far from her true home, the tropical jungle. And, of course, somebody has to stop a bunch of Nazis, who've been hiding in the jungle for 60 years and are planning to attack the US at any cost.

While I applaud the effort to explore other topics besides the flagrant exploitation of natural resources, the premise for this story is simply too far fetched for my taste. And, the illustrations aren't anything special. Sheena is tall, slender, lithe, and rounded out with perhaps about 250 cc of silicone. Dressed as a civilian, she could easily pass for a fashion model. In other words, nothing like the stuff Vesubio produces.

As per the usual routine, Sheena teams up with her animals, the natives, and a young idealist to stop the exploitation of sacred grounds by wealthy industrialists. Add an estranged militant dictator, his gang of thugs, and his beautiful young wife, whom we assume is really the one in control of the government, throw in espionage and a mélange of science, supernatural, myths and prophecies, and, finally, broadcast the muddled affair on the 6 o'clock news, and you've got a decent drama.

As for the artwork, Sheena's rather tenuous look on the cover by Huddleston is misleading. In the actual story, illustrated by Villagrasa, she is clearly more athletic. Yet, Villagrasa still achieves realistic proportions by keeping Sheena slender and endowing her with natural looking breasts. Nevertheless, except for the silicone boobs, I prefer Dynamite's artist, Moritat. Moritat's Sheena is even more muscular, and with a dark complexion and her hair in a bang, she looks more like a native amazon. However, there's a big difference in the effort Moritat makes on the covers and what he does in the ordinary story pages.

As for the writing, I think DDP's writer, DeSouza, has a much better sense of drama than do Dynamite's writers Bennett and Trujillo. DeSouza's plots are more convoluted, and he achieves a greater sense of realism, even though he introduces elements of fantasy.

So, to sum it all up, I'm still not satisfied with the way Sheena is illustrated. I want more muscle and a darker complexion. A top ranked figure competitor without over inflated breasts implants would make a good model. And, I want the way she is illustrated on the cover to match with how she actually appears in the story. And, I want someone to come up with another story besides the usual one about exploiting natural resources.

Would you be surprised, if I told you it's a story about ruthless industrialists who seek to exploit the riches of the jungle for there own selfish interests? Apparently, a century isn't enough time to come up with another theme. So, the authors offer us yet another story which aims to prove that man's efforts to unleash forces of nature that he cannot hope to control, let alone even understand, will only lead to disaster. Rather than open Pandora's box, it is far wiser to trust that nature will spontaneously provide us with all of life's essentials. And, with love, courage and determination, we can endure the world's many hardships.

I don't agree. First of all, what may be intended to seem like simple intuition on the part of Sheena strikes me as sophisticated reasoning. And, in any case, the mighty guardian of the forest still has to depend on special weapons to defeat evil intruders. Even a simple knife is the product of millions of years of technological development, as is the ability to safely produce fire, and extract lethal toxins from plants and animals. Perhaps the authors will admit that superior knowledge is the main reason humans are the dominant species on the planet and that science is essential for our continued survival, but they appear to have missed the simple fact that the lore of the jungle is actually acquired through diligent exploration.

As for the artwork, it's a collaborative effort from numerous artists over the course of several issues. Judging from the cover art, Moritat achieved the most muscular physique (#1). Moreover, his dusky model with her hair in bang looks more like a native of the amazon than the glamour girl favored by Campbell (first illustration below). Unfortunately, Moritat doesn't achieve his best look in most of the illustrations he uses throughout story, nor does he have a good feel for natural looking breasts. And, the coloring by Casi Silver is too dull, especially in the first issue. The coloring used by Ceci de la Cruz in issues #4 and #5 is much more vivid, but Sanapo made Sheena too tall and slender for my taste. I've decided to show you some of the extras to give you a better of idea of what to expect. Although, the cover art is far superior to the illustrations you'll see in the main story.

There are a few good action scenes, but it only rates PG-13 for sex & violence content. On the other hand, the story line is more intriguing than usual. An archaeological dig unleashes supernatural beings, etc, but it's not quite so self-explanatory. Numerous settings and characters with conflicting agendas confuse the picture. On the negative side, some of the characters do come off as rather childish. I suppose the writer figured that only kids are going to read it anyway.

As for the illustrations, the lines are simple, but the artist does have a good feel for feminine proportion. As a civilian, Sheena looks like the woman in cover 2. This look is rather thin, but it's normal for a fit woman. However, when Sheena dons her leopard skin, she comes out looking like the woman in cover 1, an athletic look that's more to my liking. Her change in physical proportions isn't as striking as the Hulk transformation, but it is a noticeable improvement, nevertheless.

Sheena is now queen of the amazon, not the Congo. And, while her desperate struggle to protect nature from heartless exploitation may seem banal, far fetched would be a more fitting description of this story. For, when jungle fantasy merges with science fiction, simultaneous events in the past, present and future become a confused mêlée. Unbeknownst to Sheena, her enemies are also intruding on Tarzan's territory in 1936. And, unbeknownst to either of the two heroes, the not too distant future of all humanity is at stake, if we even have one!

An overused story line about wealthy industrialists and other narcissists, who look to exploit the riches of the jungle. However, 'Jungle Babe' is destined to stop the bastards. This time she teams up with a well educated political idealist, an unlikely Shaman, and even one of the bad guys. Predictably, the story has logical flaws. Why should Jungle Babe run around the city practically butt naked in front of countless onlookers? Does she really want to attract a lot of attention if she's trying to escape or perform clandistine missions? On the plus side, the convoluted plot has many elements of good drama, such as intrigue, suspense, irony, and character development. And, when the whole affair becomes another happy ending, somehow, Jungle Babe's task is still unfinished. Leaving her plenty of work to do in future episodes.

Wexford, Ireland, 951 AD. The joyful wedding of Colleen MacGrath and Donovan O'Connor promises to unite all of Ireland under one benevolent king, but, unfortunately, an evil druid has other ideas, and Colleen's innocent dreams of love, family and holy union, are brutally plundered by heathens from the north. However, the Celtic goddess, Morrigan, will not let Colleen's tormented soul rest while such injustice remains in the cruel world. On Samhain, the night of the living dead, Morrigan resurrects Coleen from desolate ruin and total despair, lending her superhuman strength and the power to communicate with animals. Possessed by an insatiable thirst for blood and vengeance, Collen undertakes a heroic quest to establish law and order on Earth and blissful eternity in the life here after. For those who live by sword, must die by the double bladed ax!

Criticism: I've been looking for a voluptuous female warrior for quite some time now. Belladonna isn't bad, but she's not quite human enough for my taste. I want a character who can be in mortal peril, but it's impossible to kill someone who's already dead. And her breasts are inflated with too much silicone for my taste. The same goes for Lady Death. If you want plenty of bloody fight scenes, you won't be disappointed, but one mighty warrior taking on a small army is a little too far fetched for my taste. Moreover, the story isn't intriguing. All the characters are stereotyped, and the rightful vengeance theme is banal. Were it not for some Celtic folklore, there would hardly be anything original about the story.

So, if you're looking for a 'bad ass' goddess, who enjoys a good row and has no reservations about killing her enemies, you might have a look. On the other hand, if you looking for a deep story that really makes you ponder the mysteries of life, you'll probably be disappointed.

In Pictland, 851 AD, there is a tribe of amazons so savage, that even outnumbered 10 to 1, the ferocious shield-maidens are practically assured of blood soaked victory, so long as Belladonna leads the charge. Endowed with superhuman strength and incredible powers of recuperation, only black magic can stay Belladonna's relentless advance. Enter Skene, an evil sorceress with the power to foresee the future, conjure giant monsters, create vivid illusions, and bend men's minds to her diabolical will. To mere mortals, Belladonna may be invincible, but, armed with witchcraft, Skene holds the means to end the viking warrior's campaign of terror.

This story is even bloodier than the last. The warriors are literally showered in crimson, and they don't even trouble to wipe it off as they move from scene to scene. Although I'm not especially found of gore, this Belladonna is more to my liking, because she's more human. Although she's almost impossible to defeat, she can be killed with witchcraft and special weapons, and Skene would have succeeded in doing so, were it not for her own overconfidence. Nevertheless, the story is still too far fetched for my taste.

Although I expect Belladonna to be a great fighter, I prefer a heroine who would be at a disadvantage, if she were outnumbered by as little as 3-1. And, even with supernatural powers of recuperation, she should still be vulnerable to ordinary weapons, if blows are severe and numerous. Decapitation, for example, should be lethal. Moreover, I feel that some of the heroes should be male. In this story, other than Belladonna's personal companion, most males are villains, and they are relatively easy to defeat.

A four part series, complete with a preview and a short story about a gypsy who becomes a werewolf.

Once again, the only threat to Belladonna's bloody crusade is another woman. And, as the full moon bears witness, the viking warrior's mortal enemy gains the upper hand, but only temporarily. In the end, the belligerent adventuress stands victorious over another would-be conqueror. Yet, not far off, Ana, the she-werewolf is on the prowl.

When a group of travelers somehow wind up in a prehistoric world, Jungle Girl goes out of her way to save them. Following her own conscience, Jungle Girl soon embarks on a quest of discovery through dark caverns, underwater citadels and forbidden lands, until she finally encounters the Master.

Not just another female counterpart to Tarzan, Jungle Girl seems to have more in common with Conan. Like many comic book heroes, Jungle Girl is practically superhuman. She eats dinosaurs for dinner, she can tear the head off of a giant bear with her bare hands, and she does battle with enormous monsters that look to have come from the pages of H.P. Lovecraft. In short, Jungle Girl is an indomitable free spirit that can never be possessed by any man, beast, or extraterrestrial being. In other words, she's the personfication of nature itself, and anyone who disrespects her awesome power is a fool.

As the story unfolds, Jungle Girl's devoted neanderthal follower, Monkey Boy, quickly learns to use bombs, machine guns, and torpedos to destroy the horrible creatures and the countless enemies that repeatedly besiege them. In the end, however, it comes as no surprise that it takes a supernatural artifact to finally triumph, not to mention bravery, loyalty, savoir-faire, and a little help from unexpected allies.

Frankly, the story is far too far fetched for my taste, but I do like the way Batista outlined Jungle Girl's physique. While she's much brawnier than Sheena, Jungle Girl still remains feminine. Unlike the sketches we often see in this forum, Batista was careful not to overexaggerate her musculature to the point where she would look like a man. Instead, he framed Jungle Girl like a typical figure/fitness competitor. Of course, she's clearly more athletic than ordinary men, but, when compared to the neanderthals of her world, it's relatively easy to distinguish between the genders. This is not simply a question of size, but also one of physical proportion. Although Jungle Girl is taller than Monkey Boy, he has thicker limbs and a larger torso. Whereas, Jungle Girl is the one with the more curvaceous posterior, and the artists afford us many generous views of it.

So, to sum it all up, if you want plenty of action and adventure, and you fancy a babe who's boss and has a bod like an olympian, Jungle Girl may be worth a gander.

A playful satire about a teenaged superhero, who gets turned into a sex goddess by an evil warlock. The four part series is G-Girl's personal account of the various misadventures she's had ever since her gender-change. She claims that she wants to return to normal, but G-Girl has to admit that she likes all the attention that her feminine sex appeal has been getting her. However, affairs do don't turn out to be as easy as she had expected. G-Girl's attempts to manipulate men often fail. And, not only does being a celebrity compromise G-Girl's role as a superheroine, it has made her new enemies, including men who try to abduct her.

For a change, I like the concept. Given, the highly improbable nature of G-Girl's transformation (and the sensitive nature of the subject), I think the publisher rightly judged that this tall tale can't be taken too seriously, even in a market where outrageous fantasies are common place. Nevertheless, the writers didn't turn the whole romance into a pointless farce. To my liking, they rely more on insightful wit, instead of banal slap-stick humor. However, numerous unfinished plots leave the reader with too many loose ends. And, while G-Girl looks a lot like a swimsuit model, the more muscular physique of a figure model would probably better suit someone who has to perform feats of great strength while still remaining feminine.

Set In the 1970's, a cumming of age story about a small town girl, who has ambitions of becoming an acclaimed actor. Besides having bona fide talent, it doesn't hurt that Chastity is also young and attractive, but her abusive and ill tempered dad has other plans for her. She flees to England in the hopes of pursuing her dream, but, instead, she winds up a roadie for a radical band of nasty punk rockers. And, as if her predicament wasn't hopeless enough, she has a chance encounter with a completely revolting bloodsucker. Ironically, Chastity practically has to die in order to truly live, but can she ever be happy eking out a kill or be killed existence? How will she ever find time for love and romance?

After having been 'made', Chastity soon learns that she can do more than recit Shakespeare, assuming she will ever have an opportunity to do so before a welcoming audience. Chastity has been 'blessed' with an extremely rare trait that prevents her from being 'detected' by other vampires. As a result, she becomes a vampire slayer. Unlike Buffy, however, Chastity is a vampire herself. Yet, even with a special talent and outstanding martial arts skills, Chastity still has to use her wits to defeat superior enemies.

I like the story. Choosing a different time and place for the setting helps make the fantasy seem real. It's not easy to believe in vampires, but it's possible to imagine that such events can occur in an exotic world. Moreover, British accents, theatrics, and dream like reveries make the story more thought provoking. They even throw in a cameo appearance from Jimmy Page!

So, if you fancy a sexy vampire slayer dressed in skimpy outfits, Chastity may be worth a gander.

A convoluted soap opera about a strong willed and independent young woman, who's trying to pursue an ambitious career and still find time to enjoy life. Being a vampire, however, doesn't help matters. More than 20 years after having been 'made', Chastity has become a successful actress. However, like déjà vu, yet another one of Chastity's close friends has been taken hostage by an old nemesis.

Many years ago, four years after being 'made', Chastity was still struggling to survive in the neon jungle. For the second time, she unwittingly found herself in the middle of a brutal gang war, and, by the time she learned who her true allies were, it was nearly too late. Once again, Chastity's worse enemy turned out to be a scheming, manipulative, bitch. Although Chastity has the ability to go unnoticed, it's not easy to hide the truth from Jade, an ancient oriental vampire sorceress, who can read her mind like an open book.

I don't like this story as much as Theatre of Pain. While I generally like sophisticated plots, this one is just too confusing. If we reconstruct the events which happened in the past, we get the following: There has been a rash of crime lord homicides in the neighborhood. Antonio fears for his life, but he has no idea who is behind the assassinations. He needs someone to investigate the assassinations very discretely, and Chastity is the obvious choice. With her help, Antonio is able to figure out that Jade is the one who has been trying to take over his territory, and eventually he is able to dismantle her operation. All this seems logically consistent, except for one problem. Inexplicably, Antonio never told Chastity the truth in the first place.

Antonio knew that Kenji Kitano was the next target, but if he did not really want Kitano dead, why did Antonio tell Chastity to kill him, especially since she didn't even want to be an assassin? Not only did Chastity wind up saving Kitano in the end, but she even earned a bonus for it. Besides, the author provides no obvious explanation for how they were able to deceive a mind reader.

As for the illustrations, the artists made her more athletic than in the previous story. This decision makes sense, given all the fighting she has to do, butt, I see no reason why she has to have silicone breast implants.

More than 20 years after being 'made', Chastity finally gets a starring role, and she even finds time for a little romance. However, her carefree masquerade may soon come to an end. Yet another war among the undead has exploded into deadly violence, and vampires and werewolves seem to be everywhere. Chastity keeps saying that she doesn't want to fight, butt she's under intense pressure, and her actions speak louder than her words. Hemlock, aka the nomad, has the solution to her moral dilemma. Chastity has to find him, but, just like Chastity, he cannot be detected by other vampires. In the end, it's he who finds her.

Ed Benes does the illustrations in this series, which I think is an improvement over Justiniano's work. Female characters in fighting roles are very tricky. Because of her athletic nature, Chastity has to be well muscled. Because of her feminine nature, on the other hand, Chastity has to be smooth and slender. There should be a clear difference between the genders, especially when Chastity is compared to brawny men, such as the werewolves.

Benes gave Chastity a subtle amount of muscle definition, without making her too ripped and bulky. In order to give her feminine proportions, Benes broadened Chastity's back, shoulders, and hips, while narrowing her waist. The resulting hourglass shape is very different than the V taper that is more characteristic of men. Moreover, in terms of overall muscle distribution, Benes placed more emphasis on the lower half of the body. He added contours to Chastity's hips and thighs, while keeping her arms relatively slender. Of course, in order to make Chastity look more feminine, Benes exaggerated the size of her breasts. So, at times, it looks as if Chastity has silicone implants, especially when she is wearing an open-cup top, but at least Benes did not inflate them as much as Justiniano did. And, a natural look is not entirely a question of size. Since real breasts hang to some extent, teardrop shaped breasts appear more realistic than spherical ones. Finally, dressing Chastity in in skimpy attire (hotpants, miniskirts, lingerie, g-strings, etc) lends her a lot of sex appeal.

As for the story line, I like this relatively simple plot better than the confusing one used in Rocked (both stories by Phil Nutman), but Theatre of Pain (Brian Pulido) is still my favorite series, because Pulido's story seems more like something that could happen in real life. I've already mentioned that in Lust for Life Chastity encountered vampires and werewolves just about everywhere she went. Well, why didn't someone notice them? If bunch of wild animals started a brawl in a local night club, you would think that it would make the 6 pm news, but Fern Fierstein never mentions the event. Moreover, Chastity may have superhuman abilities, butt when she's up against other freaks of nature, the only advantage she has is her superior martial arts skills. Do you think Bruce Lee would win if he had to fight a whole football team all by himself?

So, if you fancy a modern, independent woman, who kicks butt in bar room brawls, all without mussing up her fashion model hairdo (let alone break a fingernail or even get so much as a drop of blood on her fancy dress), Lust for Life may be worth a look.

Chastity now lives in a studio apartment on St. Mark's Ave, New York. She loves the place, but she has to pay the rent, and she can only work at night. So, she gets bit roles in corny movies, and she works part time as a bodyguard. At least the latter assignment gives her VIP passes to rock concerts. There's one other problem, however. Her two girlfriends, who live just below her, don't know she's a vampire. In other words, they might become collateral damage in another one of Chastity's feuds. Now, if they knew Chastity's secret, Kendra and Miyu could decide whether it would be more prudent to find another housemate or whether to try to help Chastity instead. But, as it stands, they have no idea that they're in grave danger.

Fortunately, there is some good news. Chastity managed to find a friend who smuggles her meals from a local blood bank. In other words, Chastity can satisfy her voracious appetite without ever having to kill anyone. And, then there's the 'hunk'. Tall, dark, and independently wealthy, Midknight is a modern day spinoff of Kolchak, The Night Stalker. Although he hates vampires, he's learned to respect Chastity, since she's obviously helping him keep the sleazebags off the streets. Not surprisingly, however, Chastity's after dark activities eventually gets her into serious trouble. One fateful night, a werewolf gets out of line, and Chastity has to take her out. It turns out that Savagri's dad is a mafioso. In other words, the former assassin is now herself in danger of being assassinated.

It's not easy for Chastity to find a lover, because anyone wants to be her mate will have to sign a disclaimer.

'Before initiating any intimate relationships with Chastity Marks, I solemnly swear that I fully understand and accept the risks of having an affair with a vampire. I do realize that is quite possible, if not than very likely, that I may eventually suffer severe physical harm, such as being maimed, crippled, or even killed. I also understand that psychological damage, such as going completely insane, is another strong possibility. It is also conceivable that I may be sentenced to Hell as punishment for my sinful misconduct. In the event of any such misfortune, or any other unforeseen tragedy, I will not reproach or take any vindictive actions against Chastity Marks, whether such adversities be direct or indirect consequences of any dealings I may have or have had with her.'

And, in addition to the extreme compromises stated above, Chastity still has more demands. First of all, since the candidate must sign the disclaimer VOLUNTARILY, it is essentially that he/she KNOWS that Chastity is a vampire. Secondly, the candidate MUST be trustworthy. 1) He/she cannot use Chastity's secret as a means to somehow exploit or take advantage of her, 2) He/she cannot clumsily reveal her secret to anyone, even unintentionally, and 3) He/she has to be able to deal with supernatural beings, and, ideally, help Chastity to deal with them. Finally, what few candidates she may find might be completely revolted just by the thought of sleeping with a living corpse! So, at the moment, Kyle, aka Midknight, is Chastity's only chance for romance.

A child molester is given a death sentence. In order to exact revenge, the murderer's son and daughter are systematically killing off all the members of the jury that condemned the sick bastard. There's just one more thing, Kyle was on the same jury. Chastity pieces together the clues just in time to save him. However, I see no reason why he couldn't have simply told Chastity what was going on from the beginning.

Unless, the author wants to prove that Kyle, aka Midnight, is more of a liability than an asset to Chastity. Whereas, now that they know she's a vampire, her girlfriends are more than welcome to help Chastity out. Why? Attitude. Kyle's nothing, but a pathetic loser. And, Chastity is relieved to finally be able to dump his sorry ass. If you don't enjoy life, you may as well be dead. So, no matter how bad things may seem, it's essential to maintain a sense of optimism. Only then can you chase away your personal demons. Words of wisdom, perhaps, but I see no reason why Chastity would be better off as a lezbo.

In Dynamite comics, Chastity is a half-human vampire hybrid. She has the superhuman powers of a vampire without the usual weaknesses. Notably, she can stand the light of day, and she isn't critically dependent on blood. The story about how Chastity became a vampire is also quite different.

In the 21st century, vampires and werewolves have become so discreet that few people even know that they actually exist. Until one day a rogue vampire decides to make a 'public statement'. Needless to say, Chastity wasn't the least bit pleased to be Alyce's latest victim. Nor are the other vampires at all happy. Should the world finally became aware of their existence, vampires might one day be hunted into extinction. Werewolves are also at risk. So, traditional rivals, lycanthropes and nosferatu, decided to join forces and put a stop to a common enemy.

It's not a bad story, especially if you like lot's of gore. If you like mystery, there are a few surprises, but it's not the kind of drama you'll find yourself pondering long after you've finished reading it. What really earns a thumbs down for me, is Chastity's new look. Have you seen the punk hairdo, she sports in volume 2?

While it's true that Dynamite's character looks like a normal young woman, in terms of her physique, I prefer the sexy one. Chaos' character may not be a typical female, but her curvaceous body is well within the reach of a good fitness model. I suppose Dynamite is trying to target teenage girls, who have little interest in seeing Chastity as a sex object. But, even in terms of personality, I prefer Chaos's character. Since she can't go out in the day, and since she desperately needs blood, Chastity is more vulnerable. I also like her habit of daydreaming, her interest in rock music, her ambitions to become a great actress, and her vain attempts to enjoy the night life and a little romance. In Chaos, Chastity has the personality you expect from a young woman with hope for the future. Whereas in Dynamite, Chastity's dreams were almost entirely lost from the moment she became a vampire. So, I prefer the original version of Chastity to Dynamite's new prototype.

Inexplicably, Moonstar awakens to find herself stretched out on the floor in an unknown lair, from which there seems to be no escape. Even worse, the champion of justice can neither see nor hear Nightshade and Vega, but she can certainly FEEL their vicious blows. Fortunately, Moonstar is not as helpless as she may seem. Not surprisingly, a couple of self centered villainesses don't make a good team, and their own conflict of interest allows Moonstar to take the initiative. Nevertheless, no one can predict how this contest of wills will finally end, if it ever does.

Tiffany is my all time favorite from HL. Her athletic physique appears all natural, and she sports it well in a very revealing costume. If every actress could have a seductive bod like hers, who would need steroids and silicone?

It's tough to be an icon of purity when you're as seductive as Avengelyne, especially if you appear to be weak and helpless. And, it's in this same state that Peter, a man of the cloth, finds God's messenger, shortly after she was cast down to Earth. Cowering like an animal, with no clothes on her back, and without so much as a telephone number or an e-mail address to contact her father, Avengelyne soon realizes, to her horror, that she's not the only soul who has fallen from grace. Avengelyne teams up with Glory (Wonder Woman with a punk hairdo) to stop a power mad demon from possessing a magic scepter.

The story contains the usual logical flaws, which have become a staple of comic book fiction. From the very beginning, in volume 1, the author made it clear that fallen angels may look like humans, but they give off a special scent that lets other fallen angels identify them. Yet, inexplicably, in this story Avengelyne doesn't know that Devlin is a demon. You would think his name would have been a big enough hint. So, in the end, Devlin practically has to tell Avengelyne (and Glory) what both bobblehead dolls were too dumb to figure out. And, ironically, his admission is yet another logical flaw. It's simply bad poker strategy to tell your opponent what cards your holding. Finally, if it's true that men can't use the scepter, why did Glory feel the need to hide it from her father?

Should Avengelyne prostitute herself for charity? Apparently, the answer is no. Unless, the sudden apparition of no fewer than 6 demons is only a coincidence. Remarkably, one of them gets his head chopped off in front of 100,000 onlookers and a live TV audience to boot. Now, did anybody notice anything out of the ordinary? Of course not. It's not as if deadly fights between demons and angels happen every Sunday afternoon in most evangelical churches. As the story aims to prove, however, outward appearances can often be misleading. So, it's safe to assume that what happened at a so called Christian gathering was just a publicity stunt.

At times, it may seem that the plight of humanity is hopeless, that we'll all be completely consumed by hatred. However, all you need is a little faith. For, during these defining moments in history, God sends us a savior. This one is a sexy female warrior, who shows us that actions speak far louder than words.

The good vs evil routine may be overplayed, but the writer wisely waits till the end of the story before he spells it all out for you in black & white. I also like the character. Taarna has some mojo, but just like Jesus Christ, she's made of flesh & blood. She's also illustrated very realistically. She's athletic, butt feminine and quite human.

People and the events that occur in a 21^st century gang war parallel those of the trojan war in ancient Greece, except the modern day Athena has little recollection of who she is or was in the past. It seems that even the mightiest of gods may not have the power to change destiny. Nevertheless, Athena has to find a way, otherwise humanity will be doomed to forever repeat a never ending cycle of senseless wars.

The basic theme is ok, but it seems odd for greek warriors and gods to 'magically' appear 'out of nowhere' in this day and age. It would seem more natural if we saw them in a dream or a vision, or perhaps they only appeared in secret. Perhaps the most negative point about the story is that Athena doesn't do a whole lot of fighting. Most of the time, she's a mortal woman. And, since mortals can't really compete with the Gods, when she finally turns into a goddess, it isn't much of a contest.

On the plus side, I like the way Athena is illustrated, at least in terms of physical proportions. Neves gave her shapely thighs, a narrow waist, and curvaceous hips. And, thankfully, he left out the silicone implants! The only negative point, would be the fact that he made Athena came a bit too smooth. Some abs and perhaps a ripple in her quads might be an improvement.

So, to sum it all up, although there is a fair amount of action in this gang war drama, Athena appears more often as a normal civilian rather than as an invincible goddess.

Dejah Thoris makes an unlikely alliance with a dangerous rival, Phondari, The Pirate Queen of Mars. This story is more provocative than the previous volume, owing to scenes depicting canabalism and carnivorous monsters. And, taking a voluptuous babe like Dejah Thoris as your captive is always exciting. Butt, I like it better when heroic females are complimented by males, even nerds like Valian Dor.

As for the illustrations, I thought Rafael did a good job of giving Dejah Thoris well rounded feminine proportions, while at the same time making her athletic enough for the role of a warrior. Her tits are a little over-inflated, butt their bottom heavy shape makes them appear more natural. However, I didn't like the color. Quite simply, Dejah is too pink. I wanted something closer to real flesh tone. As for the covers, you have a choice between a warrior (Renaud), a sex doll (Alégarza) and a life like woman (Jusko).

Vampires from Strio (Saturn) have a weapon that can completely annihilate virtually all life on Barsoom (Mars). However, Red Martian blood is especially delicious. Accordingly, the vampires would rather keep Martians as livestock. So, they take Dejah Thoris hostage and try to force her to persuade the Martians to surrender. Not surprisingly, the Martians have other plans. And, once again, Dejah Thoris teams up with another unlikely ally. In order to save Barsoon, however, he must make the ultimate sacrifice.

For the second time, Dejah Thoris cannot hope to repay a man who forfeited his own life to save hers. But, is his heroic death truly unfortunate? Those of you who've read volume 1, The Colossus of Mars, will recall that Valian Dor was fat and clumsy. Scientific genius and all, perhaps you'll agree that it's just as well that Dejah Thoris didn't have to marry him! Ditto for the fall guy in this story.

There is one surprise worth noting, however. In much the same way that John Carter benefits from the lower gravity on Mars, on Vona (Titan) Dejah Thoris is physically more powerful than the native Palidors.

Finally, while the story is entertaining, Carita's sketches of Dejah Thoris are not as good as Rafael's work in the previous volumes. Carita doesn't seem to know how to draw a curvaceous posterior.

With the return of Carlos Lopez, Dejah Thoris is back in voluptuous form. In the meantime, no one in Helium knows who is behind a recent rash of political assassinations. Given her obvious talents, Dejah Thoris would make an excellent spy, but dangerous fieldwork is not a suitable assignment for a princess. And, if she's not careful, Dejah Thoris just might become another human subject for yet another inhuman experiment. Although the scientist is the villain this time, just as before, divided groups are united by a common enemy. And, just as before, the guy who 'takes one' for Dejah Thoris is somewhat repulsive. If anything, I imagine that Dejah Thoris is lucky that she doesn't have to repay him for saving curvaceous derrière. So, I'm still not convinced that victory over evil requires great sacrifice.

I should add that Rise of the Machine Men is comprised of only three issues, #20-22. Whereas, if you really want a surprise, the second story, #23-24 is worth a look.

It seems that Senneth Dor simply refuses to die. Not surprisingly, he has a diabolical plan to take over all of Barsoom. So, per usual, political adversaries have to work together to deal with him and his army of machine men. However, are the Jeddaks willing to wage a war that will cost millions of innocent lives? As for Dejah Thoris, like a typical comic book hero, no one has to ask her to go out of her way to save a mortal enemy. In this case, however, she places more than her own life at risk. If her plan backfires, the Red Martians could all be at the mercy of the machine men!

This volume also includes a short story where we get a glimpse of the life of Dejah Thoris in her youth. Not surprisingly, the fact that she's a princess does not mean that Dejah Thoris had it easy. On the contrary, her older brother was kidnapped by her father's enemies, and her mother was assassinated. But, at least, her parents loved her.

In the far distant future, Earth will become so uninhabitable that we'll decide to move to Mars, after we've transformed it into a terrestrial like environment. However, the Martians don't like our plan. You'd think that given enough time, we would eventually learn how to settle our differences without killing one another. But, it seems that no matter our technologically advanced we become, humans are little more than a pack of wild animals, engaged in a never ending struggle for survival. So, when Dejah Thoris discovers a time machine, it's not an invaluable technological breakthrough that will greatly improve the welfare of the civilized world. Rather, it is a weapon that can be used to conquer Mars. Sadly, it has to be detroyed.

Then, there's the family reunion story. First, Dejah Thoris travels into the future to meet her own daughter. Dejah Carter is not only the spitting image of her mother, but she also has her mother's heroic nature. Dejah Carter is another of many characters who are willing give their lives to save Dejah Thoris. And, once again, Dejah Thoris couldn't have hoped for a more favorable outcome. Otherwise, she would have been at odds with her own daughter for control of Helium.

Then, Dejah Thoris returns to the past to meet her long, lost brother. While still in his egg, Kajak Thoris was captured and enslaved by his father's enemies. Although Kajak Thoris eventually managed to free himself, he realized that he could never enjoy a life of nobility. His parents didn't even know that he was alive, and it was obvious that the people adored Dejah Thoris. Kajak Thoris wants to exact revenge, but simply killing Dejah Thoris would not be nearly as satisfying as watching her suffer as he completely destroys her life. Despite Arkhalla's brutality, Shamath would not hestitate to give his life to save hers, because Arkhalla has become the only thing that he lives for. The never ending conflict over money and absolute power. The ring changes hands several times, but it only works for pure Hyperions. To make this overplayed Good vs Evil routine a bit more interesting, the ring can either strengthen or weaken Allura, who happens to be a split personality case with amnesia. Being all but entirely clueless, Allura uses the most straight forward and reliable method to learn the truth, namely, beat the crap out of everyone and force them to confess. Her plan works even better, when she kills people before they have a chance to tell her anything. In other words, Allura is a brainless idiot, just like everyone else in this banal story.

The fight choreography is fair at best, and the lighting is a bit too 'black & white'. Butt, I do like Allura's costume, even the mask. Cayla is built just the way I like them, with wide hips and heavy thighs. Her ass could be a bit firmer, butt she seems to be all natural, and I'd be glad to have a babe like that in the sack. Lift 'n' carry fans will appreciate that Cayla is strong enough to cradle carry a light woman (Hailey Stillwell).

It wasn't easy to find a sexy comic that isn't XXX Porn. It contains nudity, but the characters never perform any sexual acts. I like the way the girls are illustrated too. You don't have to be a 'shrink' to notice that the size problem is related to sexual maturity. But, why do they call it 'adult' entertainment if it's obviously childish? To answer this riddle (which I have been pondering for many years) I had to study the theories of Sigmund Freud. Freud's ideas are as whacky as they cum, but, then again, so is human sexuality. One of Freud's most famous theories is called the Oedipus complex, named after a Greek drama, where the hero, Oedipus, unwittingly kills his father and marries his mother.

According to Freud, the Oedipus complex is a stage that boys go through between the ages of 3-5, when they become romantically attached to their mother. At the same time, boys become jealous of their father, and they compete with him for their mother's attention. Girls, on the other hand, go through a similar process, which some psychologists call the Electra complex. Initially, girls are attracted to their mother, but eventually they become romantically attached to their father and hostile towards their mother.

Freud's theories still remain controversial to this day. If you can't remember if something really happened, how do you know for sure that it ever did? Freud, himself, had doubts over whether his patients' memories were real, imagined, or somehow distorted.

By the way, if your only knowledge of Freud is what you see on Netflix, then you know little about the man. Freud was NOT a hypnotist, nor did he believe in the supernatural. Freud's main approach to uncovering repressed memories was by analyzing our dreams. The process is something like figuring out a rebus puzzle, except dreams also include sound effects, and personal information about the dreamer is essential.

Freud eventually concluded that dreams are a clandestine means of fulfilling our juvenile sexual fantasies. We do not even recognize this, ourselves, because our subconscious motives are disguised. First of all, the goal of the fantasy is to realize our juvenile desires. Therefore, we're going to interpret the story from the point of view of a girl in her Electra stage. Most of the characters in the story will represent members of her own family. The Oedipal child's objective is to take her mom out of the picture and marry daddy. Moreover, she will usually portray herself as either a hero or a victim of injustice.

In Olympic Trials, both Marilyn and Frank become children, while Suzy and the other girls become grown-ups. In the end, Marilyn and Frank walk off arm in arm, presumably to become lovers. Therefore, Marilyn is the Oedipal child, who realizes her childhood desire to possess her father (Frank) apparently by shrinking him down to her size. Since Suzy is Marilyn's chief adversary, she represents Marilyn's mom, who becomes her coach. The other gymnasts represent Marilyn's older siblings, who participate in child rearing and discipline.

Notice that even though were watching a sporting event, it is really all about who gets the 'hunk' in the end. The men are excellent judges of sexual fitness, but the women are there to critic the girls' ethics. Marilyn had an attitude problem from the very beginning. Later in the story, she gets spanked for disobedience. Butt, who was actually guilty of sexual misconduct? That's right, Suzy disrobed in front of the whole audience! Notice that the audience sees what Marilyn wants them to see. Suzy is a slut, and Marilyn is an adorable child hero. Meanwhile, Marilyn's catty behavior is only revealed in private.

So far everything seems to fit Freud's hypothesis, butt there is still one enigma to ponder. For Marilyn to realize her dream, both she and Frank had to become smaller, but why? Weren't they a good match at the beginning of the story when they were both large and the other girls were too small? It's true that Marilyn was only second best when she was a big girl, but she could hardly mount the balance beam when she became a toddler. So, why is it better to be smaller?

If I were Sigmund Freud, I would surely notice that Frank is another word for hotdog. That's right, people can be phallic symbols, and little Frank is the embodiment of woman's deepest desire. Butt, since size is an obvious metaphor for virility, why would Marilyn want Frank to lose it?

Perhaps the author wants to suggest the idea that kids don't have to worry about how they look or how much they achieve. In the game of life, the real winners are those who just play for fun. Freud might argue that Marilyn's juvenile fantasy is a replacement for a wish that she could not fulfill as an adult. If her sex life is unfulfilling, maybe she has to imagine a way that she can be happy without it. Or, perhaps she wants a child, but she can't have one. So, in her dream she has little Frank.

Kara's mission is strictly to observe human kind. However, in violation of planet Nova's prime directive, Kara has chosen to become Supernova, a costumed vigilante with superhuman powers. Unfortunately, Supernova has a dangerous nemesis. Xander is a power mad scientist, who wants to take over the world. In order to defeat Supernova, Xander recruits the help of another extraterrestrial, Kali.

Most mortals can do little harm to Supernova, but Kali has a special weapon that can destroy her. Yet, Kali is not the least bit interested in helping Xander. She wants to claim the Earth for her own kind. Always prepared for every contingency, Xander has a weapon of his own that can de-power both aliens. But, before he kills Supernova, he wants to teach her a lesson in humility. There are two alternative endings, one where Xander wins, and one where Supernova is victorious.

Compared to other low-budget superheroine peril productions, the fight scenes are well choreographed, the special effects are good, and the acting is fair. However, what really sets Bluestone apart from the rest of the field is the effort they make to develop a plot. In a typical superheroine peril drama, there isn't much to it. The overconfident champion of justice simply walks straight into a trap and then gets owned by the villains. This simple scheme is used over and over again in hundreds of films. It's all too predictable, and very unimaginative.

Bluestone, on the other hand, strings together numerous short films into an ongoing series. They have the usual variety of sexy crime fighters: Batbabe, Superchick, and Wonderful Woman, etc. And, since all the superheroines belong to the same community, their individual story lines can be weaved together into one narrative. Per usual, Bluestone heroines are stereotyped and predictable, but the villains are not. Many characters have ulterior motives, and others are mind-controlled. In effect, we can't easily tell the good guys from the bad ones, and this is why Bluestone dramas are far more intriguing than what is normal for this genre.

As for Danica, she's a bit too thin for my taste, butt she does have nice hips, and her acting skills are above average for a 'B movie' actress.

Just like in Olympic Trials (see one of my previous posts) Marilyn and Suzy are fighting over Frank, who plays the role of Superteen in this story. Once again, Suzy is too small to compete for Frank/Superteen's attention, and Marilyn has an attitude problem. This time, however, we will see how Frank deals with an inferiority complex, when a couple of aliens decide to study the relationship between size and sexual attraction in human subjects.

To test the idea that 'bigger is better', the aliens give Frank and Marilyn an extreme dose of humility, while they turn Suzy into a buxom blond. Contrary to what the aliens predicted, not only does Suzy still have a crush on little Frank, but she squeezes her toy boy even more tightly between her enormous breasts! What's Superteen going to do? He's lost his superpowers, he's a laughing stock at school, and now he's being used and abused by an overgrown child who's delighted with her Superteen sex doll!

According to Freud, some girls grow up fantasizing that they either have a penis, or that they will one day get one. Although they are not aware of it, this desire is the primary reason that girls with penis envy compete with their mother for their father's love.

Healthy girls, on the other hand, will identify with their mothers and accept their role as a female in society. Ideally, girls will abandon their desire to have a penis in favor of having their father's baby. This substitution is the reason that Freud thought that children are phallic symbols in dreams and sexual fantasies. Freud believed that when young girls clitorally masturbate (his own daughter is an example) they have sexual fantasies about children being abused and/or fondled.

Boys, on the other hand, become sexually attracted to their mother, but they feel threatened by their father. When boys notice that their mother does not have a penis, they mistakenly believe that she has been castrated by their father, and they fear that he will castrate them too. Healthy boys will learn to see their father as a role model, rather than a rival. This identification allows boys to break their romantic attachment to their mother and develop a strong superego, which is both our moral conscience and our ideal self image.

Frank, of course, was almost completely demoralized when the aliens made a child's plaything out of him, but it seems that Frank already had insecurity problems even before the aliens actually arrived. In the beginning, Frank was noticeably bigger and stronger than Suzy and her two friends. A normal adolescent could easily have rescued a cat from a tree. So, why did Frank have to change to Superteen? Obviously, Frank wants attention, but using his superpowers to impress the girls will do him little good, if can't reveal his secret identity.

Frank got more than he bargained for, moreover, when Marilyn arrived. From Marilyn's point of view, sex is not about love; it's a sport, and Superteen is the biggest fish in the pond. Obviously, Superteen finds Marilyn sexually attractive. When the aliens shrink her, however, Frank fears that he will suffer the same fate. This scene is a metaphorical way of representing castration anxiety.

According to Freud, all memories of our Oedipal complex have been repressed. Nevertheless, latent thoughts are still subconsciously present. As we become adults, latent thoughts define our sexual behavior and determine who we will one day marry. Moreover, repressed memories can be triggered by coincidental events at any time during our lives. When Marilyn kissed Superteen, Frank regressed to this Oedipal stage. Freud called this phenomenon deferred action.

Because of deferred action, Marilyn and Suzy can become Frank's mother. Moreover, since Frank did not yet have a strong superego in his preadolescent years, deferred action also explains why Superteen turned out to be completely impotent. As a consequence, Frank was overprotected, punished, and excessively pampered by women who view him as a sex object.

It's not completely clear whether little Frank represents a penis, a clitoris, or both. Either way, he cannot fly. At best, Frank is a premature ejaculator. And, when the aliens finally agree to return him to his normal size, Frank says to Suzy, "I'm sure glad that I'm big enough for you now." This statement seems to contradict the fact that Frank was bigger than Suzy when the story began. Therefore, their initial difference in size represents an inversion of Frank's juvenile desire to become the object of his mother's sexual desire.

On the other hand, if we imagine that Suzy is the Oedipal child, her fantasy is achieved when she becomes big enough to marry her father. At first, it does seem that Suzy would make an ideal wife. Her affection for Frank seems genuine. And, even though she is sexually attractive, we never see her make bold advances or obscene public displays. Suzy does undress in front of Frank, but this is an innocent mistake from both Suzy and Frank's point of view. Moreover, Suzy has no desire to become a giant, because parity is necessary for an ideal relationship. Yet, in the end, Frank and Suzy never have sex.

According to Freud, when some girls realize that their clitoris is inferior to a penis, they lose interest in sexual intercourse. Perhaps this is why Suzy prefers Platonic love. For Frank, however, the nightmare does not end until his incestuous desire is consummated.

This is the most inoffensive story I could find from SleepyGimp, which mainly features females dominating other women and sometimes male subs. This episode has tickle torture. Of course, the author makes the usual statement that she 'wanted it all along,' butt at least it's a decent drama. Yes, there ACTUALLY is a plot. And there ACTUALLY is a mystery.

Nancy Templeton is a Nancy Drew wannabe, who invariably gets herself into trouble in every one of her misadventures. Unlike most erotic stories that feature a heroine in peril, the author ACTUALLY credits Nancy with enough intelligence and resourcefulness to ACTUALLY solve a crime. Who would have thunk of that??? I like the way she is illustrated too.

I'll make my Freudian analysis mercifully brief this time. Notice, that there is only one father figure in the story, and he proves to be unsupportive. A strong father is necessary in girl's pre-Oedipal stage, because HE is the one who inspires her to become a woman. The girl becomes a woman in order to earn his penis (oops) I mean...uh... his love. In the absence of a father, a girl will fall in love with her mother instead. Hence, she'll grow up to become a lezbo.

In a stroke of pure genius, the villain correctly deduces that he can only be subdued by a woman with normal strength. So, the clever villain uses special technology to neutralize Ultrawoman's powers. And, exactly as he predicted, the champion of poetic justice is finally able to put an end to the bastard's wretched existence.

Synopsis: Bronwyn is practically a mountain of muscle. So it's no surprise that the mighty heroine prefers to use brute force to deal with the many daunting challenges she must face. When she's completely lost in the forest, however, her great size and strength often prove insufficient. As powerful as she is, Bronwyn cannot easily defeat gigantic monsters without a suitable weapon. Even smaller creatures can be dangerous when they attack in large numbers, and many of them are venomous. Bronwyn may be physically imposing, but she's not invincible.

Graow is a forest dwelling creature, who fell in love with Bronwyn the moment he saw her. Unfortunately for Graow, Bronwyn does not feel the same way towards him. If Bronwyn were not practically forced to accept his guidance, she would probably have dismissed Graow from the moment they first met.

Graow hopes to woo Bronwyn by giving her anything she desires, but his goal is not easy to accomplish. The childlike Bronwyn has her own agenda, and she's more ill tempered than playful. Unfortunately for Graow, Bronwyn's brutal manner of rejecting him can be emotionally and physically painful. Fortunately for Graow, Bronwyn does have a conscience. She may not love him, but she does care for someone who saved her life more than once. Unfortunately, however, Bronwyn has a dangerous mortal enemy.

Lord Tretch is an evil wizard. The forest dwellers may be too 'chicken' to stand up to him, but they know that Tretch will not hesitate to kill anyone who dares, namely, Bronwyn's former lover and warrior, Arkot. Although many of the natives flee slavery and death at the hands of a ruthless tyrant, Lord Tretch's humble servants must endure his repeated scorning and chastisement. Now, with the Fruxan Orb in his possession, the power mad schemer has the means to destroy Bronwyn and take over the world!

Critique: It is not often that heavily muscled women play heroique roles in comics and movies. The She-Hulk is a notable exception, but Marvel's recent attempt to make her very muscular has been a failure. They've opted for a more human appearance in a new TV series that will be launched in 2022.

It seems to me that there are two issues to consider when portraying a muscular woman in comics, 1) how she is illustrated, and 2) how she relates to men. In regards to their physical appearance, I prefer Frank Cho's work.

At the risk of being blunt, it's simply a question of sex appeal, and Bronwyn is too 'butch'. I want Bronwyn to have a narrower waistline line, wider hips, and a smaller torso. If I were to choose a human model, I'd like someone like Celeste Bonin, aka Kaitlyn. She's well muscled, but you know she's a woman.

As far as facial features are concerned, Bronwyn's chin should be smaller and rounder, she should have prominent cheekbones, and her nose should be narrower. The one attractive facial feature that Bronwyn does have is big lips. To make her face even more feminine, Bronwyn should have bigger, rounder eyes.

In regards to the personality of a female character, I think Bronwyn is much more human than Jungle Girl. The key is that Bronwyn is not truly indomitable. For decades, muscular women have been portrayed as being vastly superior to men. In fact, the mere notion that any man or beast could do anything to challenge her is simply ridiculous.

Often, the FBB has the personality of a simple child, laughing and giggling nonstop, while she idly plays with some helpless weakling. Sometimes her toy boy deserves a lesson in humility. At other times, he is a completely innocent victim or her wrath. There is only one moral to these stories. Regardless of who is right or wrong, the weaker gender is the one that gets punished. So long as the FBB has incontestable power, she need not treat men with any respect. They are so beneath her in status, that they're not even humans and they have no rights.

After seeing such unimaginative dramas replayed thousands of times, perhaps some FBB fans have finally grown tired of this banal routine. Thankfully, the writers of Savage Hearts have cast Bronwyn in a role that may be a refreshing change for some readers.

In Savage Hearts, Groaw is neither a toy nor a punching bag, he's Bronwyn's partner. While it's true that he does get abused by Bronwyn, there is no doubt that his help is invaluable. Eventually, Graow's persistence pays off, when Bronwyn finally acknowledges his importance and actually falls in love with him.

So, to sum up my arguments, if you want FBBs to be more popular in the media, writers and illustrators should consider a COMPROMISE. A flawed character is far more appealing than one who is no way human. A muscular woman with feminine proportions is more appealing than one who simply looks like a guy.

Critique Perhaps you'd like to see athletic women desperately trying to escape enormous monsters intent on eating them alive. Or, maybe you like brutal catfights. The plot is intriguing, and the surprise ending may come as quite a shock! As for my own interests, the story is simply too far fetched. I prefer the boy-meets-girl romance featured in my previous post, Savage Hearts.

From my point of view, comics come down to two issues, 1) whether or not I like how females are illustrated, and 2) whether or not I like the story. I do like characters who are superior to ordinary women, nevertheless, I relate better to someone who has human limitations.

I mentioned Frank Cho in my last post, so I thought I'd give you another example of his work. In Fight Girls, all the competitors have the type of physique that you'd expect to see on elite athletes, who we presume don't take muscle building drugs and don't have silicone implants.

Frankly, I find Jungle Girl more provocative, but I still prefer the characters in Fight Girls to the Ronnie Coleman lookalikes that are popular on Saradas. The Fight Girls are illustrated far more realistically than Bronwyn is in Savage Hearts. In terms of an entertaining story, however, I prefer Savage Hearts. I certainly don't desire a weakling for a companion, but if the heroine is completely indomitable, what does she need a man for?

Lady Death is an heroic female warrior, a merciless avenging angel, and even a sex symbol. Depending on your point of view, the mighty heroine can also be a hapless victim of fate or a selfless martyr. Armed with a heavy sword, Lady Death reminds of us of He-man, but, with her power to raise the dead and destroy demons, Lady Death seems to have more in common with Jesus Christ. In fact, in this series, she's even resurrected from the dead. If Lady Death can really perform miracles, however, she will have to heal her own wounds.

Synopsis: Lady Death's original name was Hope. Her father, Marius, was possessed by a demon called Sagos, who abducted and imprisoned her mother, Marion, in the Underrealm. In order to rescue her mother, and save her own life, Hope used an incantation to enter the Underrealm, where a sorceress gave her a magical sword, Armageddon, and she became Lady Death.

With help from many allies, Lady Death defeated Sagos, but she failed to save her mother. Even worse, Lady Death has a new nemesis, Death Queen, who knows Lady Death's most intimate secrets, and even wears a mask that allows her to look just like her. Death Queen has stripped Lady Death of her power, erased her memory, and sent her back to Earth.

On Medieval Earth, Lady Death has only a vague recollection of her past. As far as she knows, her name is Illadra, and she simply fell from the sky. No matter how painful her memories, however, Hope can no longer deny the truth. Without Lady Death, there is nothing the inhabitants of the Underrealm can do to stop an evil sorceress, who is completely mad and threatens to commit total genocide.

In order to defeat Death Queen, Hope must rediscover herself and conquer her personal demons. First, Illadra must travel to the most remote and treacherous regions of the Earth, in order to regain her power crystals. Then, Hope must return to the Underrealm, recover her sword, and once again become Lady Death. Hope's quest will not be easy. Death Queen is watching Hope's every move, she possesses one of Lady Death's power crystals, and she has an army of demons and the undead at her command.

Lady Death needs all the help she can get, but alliances are not easy to make when you're an avenging angel with a vicious temper. Even Lady Death's closest friends are not spared her deadly wrath. Many innocent victims have died in a seemingly endless holocaust, and there's no telling how many more souls will be sacrificed for a cause that leads Lady Death far beyond the Underrealm.

Technical: Gathering together material from various sources, I have included the Premiere (prologue) and issues #0-24, which amount to 758 color pages, including cover variants. Most copies are digital releases, others are either high quality scans or re-edits. Each issue comes with a normal cover, a two-page cover (except for the Premiere), special limited editions, and additional covers. You get nearly 200 covers, including over 100 limited editions. Finally, you get more than 500 story pages.

Art: This is my first Lady Death series. I was put off for years, simply because I didn't like her 'silicone' look. Marcelo Mueller did most of the illustrations, but I prefer Gabriel Andrade's work (#7-12). Andrade had an annoying habit of overinflating Lady Death's breasts. To my liking, however, he made her hips and thighs more curvaceous. Also note that although she looks like a ghost on the cover, in the story pages Lady Death has more natural skin tone.

Story: The plot is intriguing, but it's a little too lengthy and convoluted for my taste. The most powerful characters are female, but at least men play important roles. The series may be appealing if you like plenty of fight scenes, gore, and tragic deaths.

Psychoanalysis There are a number of ways to interpret the story. According to one model, its about a victim of child abuse. A hapless child simply cannot accept the fact that someone she loves would do anything to hurt her. Every time she's mistreated, the child blocks the painful event from memory. Illadra knew nothing of her parents, because the way they had treated her was simply too unbearable to recall. But latent memories still remained in her unconscious, and they caused her demons to appear.

The Underrealm is a metaphor for Illadria's unconscious. Tormina is the unconscious representation of herself as a mistreated child, and Death Queen is the mother who neglected her. Lady Death/Hope is a fantasy persona that represents the dream that an orphaned child and her loving mother will one day be united. This illusion is shattered, however, when Illadra looks at her own reflection.

Lady Death was to be the epitome of her mother's desire, but she failed to measure up to this ideal, and she blamed herself. Illadria returned to Castle Death as soon as she decided to commit suicide, because her mother is the cause of Hope's own self hatred. Tormina, on the other hand, strengthens her will to live. She is the one who saved Hope and gave her one more chance to redeem herself as Lady Death. In the end, however, Lady Death had to abandon her wish and live without her parents.

Critique: The basic theme about 'who takes who' is simply too banal for my taste. On the plus side, Tiffany is my favorite Heroine Legends babe, and I especially like her Moonstar costume. Her cape moves from time to time, giving the audience a glimpse of her shapely buttocks.

Psychology: Freud's basic therapeutic method involved helping his patients recall traumatic events that had happened during childhood. In so doing, his patients were able to relieve pent-up emotions that were tied to repressed memories. This psychological discharge is called catharsis. A fictional example to this effect is the mind control technique used by Spoc's half brother, Sybok, in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989).

In ancient Greece, the term catharsis actually meant menstruation, but Aristotle used it to describe the emotional reaction of an audience to a drama. In this film, the Rune of Therapy is a symbol of subconscious desire, which is personified by Talon. Its theft represents the loss of innocence.

From Freud's perspective, The Rune of Therapy is a juvenile narcissistic fantasy, which metaphorically portrays the reunion of parent and child. Talon is the possessive child, who feels betrayed. She doesn't know it, but Talon actually loves Moonstar, and she's jealous of Moonstar's friend. Moonstar represents the child's parents. As the mother, Moonstar is a nurturing female; as the father, she's a dominatrix.

Since young children do not have a fixed sexual identity, the person having the fantasy can actually be a man imagining himself as a woman. Moreover, he can imagine himself as the child and/or the parent at the same time. Note, however, that regardless of their actual gender, one of the combatants has to be the 'man'. Moonstar's heat vision and even her super breath can be phallic symbols. At one point, Moonstar uses a low blow to 'castrate' Talon into feminine submission. Regardless of who takes who, however, the two lovers are united by Talon's magic lasso.

Synopsis: Sheena may seem naive, but she's far more worldly and self-reliant than Little Red Riding Hood. She may be reluctant to kill, but Sheena will not hesitate to do so for a just cause. She may be a bit gun-shy, but there comes a time when a woman has to do things like a 'man'.

If anyone is a 'virgin', it's Ransome, Chief of Security at Cardwell Industries. Sooner or later, however, his freshly pressed suit will be tainted red. At first, Sheena seems to be his primary objective. After all, he does kidnap her in broad daylight. If Ransome really needs the beautiful young woman so badly, however, it seems counter productive to practically force her into Cardwell's new biodome.

There is no doubt that Sheena will be in grave danger, but someone has to stop an enormous jaguar that has been ripping the VIP tourists to shreds, and Ransome's security teams are simply being slaughtered.

Sheena does not like being manipulated. She knows that Ransome and CEO, Laura Jeffries are lying to her, but her animal companions are in danger. Sheena hopes to rescue them along with some missing tourists, but Ransome and Jeffries tell her nothing about the rogue cat.

Sheena has absolutely no idea what vicious predators lurk in the man-made jungle. For that matter, neither do Ransome and Jeffries. Some of these monsters would be delighted to display Sheena's head over their mantelpiece, and Ransome is practically serving them the luscious dish with all the trimmings, courtesy of Cardwell Industries.

Beatrice Toussaint is a 'bad cop'. She has a legitimate responsibility to stop criminals, but she feels no obligation to obey the law herself. So, when she discovers a group of poachers butchering defenseless animals, she takes the liberty of butchering the poachers.

Beatrice and Sheena have a continuing 'debate' over ethics. Nevertheless, the unlikely couple agree to work together towards a common goal. Unbeknown to either of the two woman, however, the future of the biodome and everything that it represents is at stake.

Critique: It's a good psychological drama, but it has some logical flaws. Probably the best part of the story is the fact that most of the major characters have personal agendas and secret alliances. As a result, it's not easy to tell the heroes from the villains. In fact, Sheena's most outstanding talent seems to be her uncanny ability to know, who she can trust.

There are some important psychological elements worth noting. The plot centers around Ransome's desperate efforts to save his daughter, except, the reader is not told this until nearly the end of the story. This theme is somehow connected to the fact that Sheena lost her parents when she was a child. It's a story with a more favorable ending to Sheena's own past. In this case, parent and child are actually reunited.

Looking at it psychoanalytically, Trip Cardwell is Ransome's shadow. Ransome is a nurturing parent, but Cardwell represents Ransome's perverse subconscious desires. Ransome has no idea that he and Jeffries are being surreptitiously manipulated.
Likewise, Beatrice is Sheena's shadow. Sheena is there to save lives, but Beatrice represents Sheena's subconscious desire for blood & vengeance.

Iwa, the great jaguar, represents our animal nature. Somehow, we have to feed the beast within and stop it from eating at the same time. Ransome and Sheena are there to curb it's appetite, while Cardwell and Beatrice are tasked with supplying it with fresh meat.

However, the story is not logically consistent. If Sheena's sole purpose in life is to protect the environment, why should she be opposed to a modern wildlife sanctuary? If she shuns modern technology, why does she study the encyclopaedia and become an expert hack? And, how did a girl who spent nearly her whole life in the jungle learn to use a grenade launcher?

Is the author trying to tell us that we are too incompetent to protect nature even if we try our best? If we go to great time and expense to build something of value only to find that it's flawed, is breaking it the best way to fix it?

I think the author misses the point that Sheena is the one who is playing the role of a selfless martyr, not Ransome. The few cheap shots that Sheena receives are not even close to the amount of punishment that Scarlett O'Hara suffers in Gone with the Wind.

So, to sum it up. Those of you who are dying to see Sheena armed with a pop gun might have a look. The illustrations aren't fantastic, but they're not bad either.

A dark crime drama that entertains with numerous hand-to-hand combat scenes, and death defying stunts. The intriguing plot is complete with irony, suspense, and character development.

Black Scorpion is aggressive, athletic, and daring to the point of recklessness. Like Batman, she does not have any superpowers. She relies on a combination of martial arts and gymnastic skills, which are complimented by her stealthy costume and high tech gadgets.

Black Scorpion is not blood thirsty, but she's willing to kill, if and when it proves necessary. Death lends the story an important sense of reality. It reminds us that if we wish to fight for justice, we have to pay a price. If Black Scorpion never felt pain, if she were never in any danger, her crusade would be completely uninspiring.

Lukasz really wishes he could have Eden Blake's body, so why does he want to get rid of it? If you were reincarnated, would you rather come back as a man or woman? For many generations, Lukasz has been a 'love em and leave em' kind of guy, who only views women as sex objects. Now, he has to suffer the humiliation of being one himself! What seems to be poetic justice, however, may actually be a fortunate turn of events. Eden can transform into Mantra.

Mantra commands the four mystic elements: earth, air, fire, and water. She can fly, pass through walls, and even teleport to the moon! Mantra can project energy beams, her cape can engulf and repel objects, and she's telepathic. There's no telling what else Lukasz will be capable of, if he ever learns to use all of Mantra's magical abilities.

Despite Mantra's amazing powers, however, Lukasz still feels weak in a woman's body. Moreover, he's not comfortable wearing a flashy costume that attracts a lot of men, and he feels awkward whenever he meets a good-looking woman that he desires. Lukasz would gladly give up his superhuman abilities in order to become a normal man again. Therefore, Lukasz needs to get to Archimage, the wizard who trapped his soul in Eden's body.

At the moment, however, Archimage is locked up in a dungeon. To set Archimage free, Lukasz will have to defeat Boneyard, an evil sorcerer who has been honing his dark magic for centuries. To make matters worse, Archimage claims that Lukasz is actually his daughter. So, Lukasz might really belong in a woman's body, after all.

Comment: I guess the story is an attempt to get young male readers to identify with a female character. I do like the theme, but I still think the 'get away from me you creep' routine is overused. Essentially, Mantra is a tease. She flaunts her 'stuff' to get men to do her favors, but she won't even kiss a guy who saved her life.

Psychology: Carl Jung believed that we all have male and female sides to our personality. From a Jungian perspective, Lukasz is either a man who has become disconnected from his anima (his female side), or Eden is a woman who is possessed by her animus (her male side). In either case, Mantra's magical abilities suggest that Lukasz is better off as a female.

For 1500 years, Lukasz fought in a war where any knight that fell could return for another battle, simply by possessing the body of a perfect stranger. Perhaps Lukasz was really Archimage's daughter from the beginning, and she took control of a man's body in order to fight her father's nemesis, Boneyard. After centuries of assuming countless male identities, Eden could have eventually come to believe that she's a man.

As a soldier, Lukasz left many widows and orphaned children in his wake. He may not show it openly, but Lukasz has a guilty conscience. Perhaps this is the reason why he became a woman in the end. Jung would call Lukasz's dilemma enantiodromia, "the emergence of the unconscious opposite in the course of time." Therefore, Mantra's true purpose could be to restore the harmonious balance between Lukasz's male and female sides. One way or the other, Lukasz and Eden are soulmates, and their destinies will be joined forever in a syzygy.

Like many of us, Lukasz is simply someone who wants to be loved. First, however, Lukasz must learn to love himself. Therefore, he must first embark on a journey of self discovery. Guided by Mantra, Lukasz gets in touch with his feelings, makes peace with his personal demons, and taps into a virtually limitless source of knowledge and power, the Self.

The Self is the "the god within us". It's a nexus that is the center of our true nature and our connection to the cosmos. From a Jungian perspective, Lukasz is a hero simply because he dares to probe the unknown, even though his introspective journey is perilous.

Intro: Lula is a professional pain slut. Much like a prostitute, Lulu has strict standards for what a client may or not be permitted to do to her. A punch in her face, for example, will cost you a hundred dollars. It's hard to hide the shiner. After a typical night's work, Lulu comes home with bruises, burns, cuts, welts, and ligature marks. If a client gets out of line, Lulu's guard dog, Danny, will deal with him.

Lulu thinks her life is under control, but she has to deal with a lot of shady characters. One day, Lulu winds up in possession of some stolen jewels that Gordan Mann, the local king pin, will kill to get his filthy hands on. Hit Me is a dark crime drama about a troubled young woman, who is worshipped by a handsome young man, who would gladly die for her.

Psychology: This is a rare mainstream comic that deals with BDSM, and the only one I know that actually explores the subject from a pyschological perspective. Over the years a number of theories have been proposed in order to explain why sadomasochists are addicted to pain. Bearing in mind that sadomasochists may not even be aware of their own motives, Freud eventually concluded that sadomasochists must have some kind of 'death wish'. While I do believe that we all have a penchant for self destruction, I don't think this is the goal of sadomasochism.

In my opinion (which is actually based on another one of Freud's theories) sadomasochism is a frustrated attempt to control our sexual urges. We cannot manage this by ourselves, so we enlist the aid of a partner. It may seem that the dom is the one in charge, but the sub is really the one who actually makes the rules.

Notice that Lulu refuses to have sex with Danny, even though she is attracted to him. This is the reason she needs to be punished. The fact that corporal punishment can be grieviously injurous is the reason why many sadomasochists seek out professional help. As a pro, Lulu is able to abuse herself and be financially rewarded at the same time. Of course, it's debatable whether or not she truly benefits from her diligent practice.

Like the bell in Pavlov's classical conditioning experiment, punishment becomes exciting due to its connection with our carnal appetites. Like drug addicts, sadomasochists gradually increase the 'dosage' of physical abuse until it eventually becomes life threatening. Doms and subs have to trust one another, and this is why the relationship between Lulu and Danny is special.

Intro: Angela is a swashbuckling heroine, who engages in swordplay and hand to hand combat with demons and other ferocious beasts. We see her prowess as a huntress in the very first scene, where she slays a dragon for sport. A highly renown demon stalker, Angela's salon is stuffed with trophy heads, lifelike carcasses, and exotic fur rugs.

Spawn, however, proved to be far more powerful and resourceful than she had expected (Spawn #9, 1993). Angela barely escaped with her life and lost a dimensional lance in a failed attempt to destroy him. To make matters worse, Angela has been falsely accused of colluding with Spawn, an irremissible felony for which she must now stand trial in Elysium. Apparently, the city of eternal light has a dark side.

Spawn sold his soul in order to be with his wife again. When you make a deal with the Devil, however, there's always a hitch. Spawn lives, but Al Simmons is dead, and Wanda is now happily married to his best friend. Spawn wishes for oblivion, but Angela has given him a chance at redemption. Despite being netherworlds apart, the two lost souls are drawn together by common enemies, mutual sympathy, and perhaps even destiny. Under a cloak of darkness, where neither Heaven or Hell can intervene, the two mortal rivals form an unlikely alliance.

Critique: First of all, I like the way Angela is illustrated. She's well muscled and slender at the same time. Like a sprinter or a long jumper, her long legs are her most prominent feature. On the negative side, the illustrations are a little too 'cluttered'. With so many odds and ends in the background, it's hard to focus on the central characters.

The story is a bizarre cross between Dante's Inferno and Romeo & Juliette. Paradoxically, the Earth has become living Hell for Spawn, and Wanda is his 'Beatrice'. At the same time, Angela has become his 'Juliette', except Spawn doesn't know it. True to her role, Angela has to be the one to take the initiative. True to his role, however, Spawn proves to be too evasive.

Finally, it's important to point out that although Angela is a mighty warrior, she's not invincible, and she still needs help. Although Spawn plays a supporting role in this story, it's an essential one.

Critique: Not much for plot and intrigue. On the plus side Tiffany is hot in her Moonstar costume. I especially like the 'upskirt' glimpses whenever her cape moves during the action. Yet it's hard to believe that Moonstar is so naive, that she doesn't even know that she's a tease.

Psychology: It's a paradox. It seems that Royal has repressed Moonstar's memory, but Royal is actually the childhood memory that Moonstar has repressed, who returns to haunt Moonstar whenever she sleeps. So, it's really Royal who is trapped, inside Moonstar's head. Moonstar is fighting a battle for supremacy that she can never really win, because she cannot make the child within her disappear.

Carl Jung would say that Royal is Moonstar's shadow. Notice that Royal is the one wearing the mask. When Moonstar loses her temper, she is letting her dark side take control of her personality. That is, Moonstar is shadow possessed. Yet Jung also believed that sometimes our more primitive traits can be useful. Note that anger allowed Moonstar to defeat Royal.

Freud would say that the Rune of Therapy represents catharsis. Freud's basic therapeutic method involved helping his patients recall traumatic events that had happened during childhood. In so doing, his patients were able to relieve pent-up emotions that were tied to repressed memories. A fictional example to this effect is the mind control technique used by Spoc's half brother, Sybok, in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989).

In this film, the conflict between Moonstar and Royal is a metaphor for Moonstar's frustrated attempts to recall her past. What Moonstar cannot remember is that as a child she was sexually attracted to her own mother. And, it is through identification with her mother that she ultimately became Moonstar. Notice that Moonstar is immune to genital attacks, and knives (phallic symbols) cannot penetrate her. Moonstar personifies the superego, the part of our mind that supresses our sexual desires. This is why Royal is punished.

Critique: This is a rare dominace and submission video, where the sub is not really a sub. Lee does get his ass whupped, but at least he doesn't 'roll over and play dead'. Masochist or not, the guy is supposed to play the role of a self respecting man who does NOT want to be beaten. When is the last time you saw a crook say: "Officer, I surrender! Please beat me up. That's how I get off. And, don't bother throwing me in jail. I didn't actually commit a crime. So, I really deserve a death sentence."

On the other hand, it's not easy to BELIEVE that a small woman could really beat up a guy, who is much bigger than she is, especially if he's not expected to cooperate. A big woman vs a small man would be more credible, but I bet even Saradas fans will grudgingly admit that most guys think hardcore FBBs are too butch. So, that's why the guy should be outnumbered, and that's also why the girls should resort to low blows and deception. Finally, it's a simple fact that hunting grizzly bears is a dangerous pass time, so even the winning side has to suffer some abuse. Frankly, I'm fed up of videos where Barbie giggles non stop while she plays with her Ken doll.

As for the psychology, you have to believe that Lee is a masochist with a death wish, but somehow he doesn't actually know it, because his true motives are subconscious.

Abigail van Alstine wants a happy life, complete with loving parents and devoted friends. She may not realize it, but Abby has the power to make wishes come true. For many years, Abby never even realized that she has magical abilities, until the day she unleashed the beast within her, and her life became living Hell. Unwittingly, Abby conjured an malignant creature that brutally slaughtered her family and friends. In panic and desperation, Abby tried to flee, but she'll never escape her personal demon. Locke and other magical beings can help her, but Abby is the one who must find a way to bridle Bezereus without killing herself.

The Necromancer is a well written drama, and the human characters (including Abby) are realistically illustrated. Abby conforms to what is currently a popular mold for superheroines. Namely, she's her own worst enemy. Like Bruce Banner, superheroines must also learn to control their awesome power, or they will face dire consequences.

Abigail reminds me of Stephan King's, Carrie. Both girls discover their powers during adolescence. Both are unfairly disciplined by an overly pious parent. However, Stephan King's character was cruelly harassed by her schoolmates. Whereas, most of the people that Abby hurts are innocent victims, including herself.

Psychology: Until the end of the story, Abby rarely confrontes Mali directly. Usually, she has her back turned to him and looks at him through a mirror.

"People will do anything, no matter how absurd, to avoid facing their own souls.”

Since mirrors show our own reflexion, we know that Mali is a part of her. Moreover, Mali also appeared to Abby in a dream, so we know he comes from her subconscious.

Mali is a projection of Abby's killer instinct. Abby would rather forget many awful things that she has done, but she can no longer deny the truth. Moreover, as long as Abby lives, so will Mali. Attempting to suppress the monster only leads to sadomasochism, self hatred, and the senseless waste of innocent lives. Nevertheless, somewhere within the subconscious lies the source of Abby's great power.

"In the Shadow is the gold."

In the Jungian school of thought, Abby is only a persona. That is, an assumed identity or the person that we imagine ourselves to be. The mirror reflects who Abby really is, namely, the Self. Shattering the fragile glass shows how Abby has become divided. In order to become whole, Abby must discover and learn to use her innate abilities without destroying herself in the process. This is the 'magic trick' that Locke must teach her. Locke is a projection of Abby's animus. He seems like a father to Abby, but the animus is not a man.

The animus is a collection of psychological traits that most women possess but do not recognize as part of their own nature. Instead, they attribute or associate 'masculine' traits with important men, animals, and various symbols in dreams, works of art, songs, myths, and religions. The animus is the emissary of a woman's subconscious. With Locke as her mentor, Abby's intuitive abilities become purposeful, orderly, and meaningful. From Locke's perspective, on the other hand, Abby is his anima.

"The anima is the archetype of life itself"

It's Abby who saves Locke from General Aldrich and his dead legions. In other words, if Abby had committed suicide, Locke would also have died. Note, however, that Abby is Locke's WILL to live. In Freudian terms, Abby is Eros, our instinct for self preservation, as well as our drive to bond with others. While Mali is Thanatos, our death instinct.

Locke is a has-been with a crutch, and Abby is the key to unlocking his own repressed potential. Locke imprisoned Mali. Yet, almost instinctively, Abby set him free. Her seemingly reckless act may be dangerous, but uncovering what lies within is the only way to find your true Self. Those who dare to undertake this introspective journey are heroes in the Jungian school.
