16.) How to insert Site Links into your post
« Reply #16 on: October 27, 2014, 11:40:27 am »

How to insert Site Links into your posts.

Here I will go over inserting site links into your posts.

There are three major kinds of site links, URL's, E-mail, and FTP.

First I want to talk of what sort of links not to post on the forum.

Do not post links to web attack sites, etc. you will be banned and your ISP will be contacted.

Do not post links to private E-mails.  A private e-mail is one not posted for general use on the web.  This would be e-mails sent to you in private in an e-mail, PM personal message, or private chat.

Do not post links to private FTP's unless the owner specifically approves.  Generally a private/personal FTP can't take hundreds of people trying to login anyway.  Also generally private FTP's are on dynamic IP's and won't work as soon as the IP changes.  So your just causing problems posting these links on the forum.

If you look at Example 1 you will note three icons.

Icon 1 is the URL link.  This link is used to post web site links.  I have already showed its use in posting file host links.

Icon 2 is the E-Mail link  This is the link for posting public E-Mail links.  In general you will not be using this one much on the forum.  One Example of the places you mite use this is in a PM (Personal Message.) to another member of the Forum, this is the only time you mite post a private E-Mail on the forum.  Another Example is you mite use it in is if your posting a Bio with info on a particular woman.  Another Example is posting contact info for one of the federations asking people to E-Mail their displeasure with the current worthless state of the contests.

Icon 3 is the FTP link.  This is the link for posting public FTP sites.  This is another link that will not get much use on the forum.  FTP's are not used all that much these days as most sites have turned to regular web pages so they can put up advertising to pay the bills.  There are still a few possible uses of the FTP link.   One Example of its use is in the General Chat when replying to a person with a driver issue and pointing them to a manufacturers FTP to download drivers.  Another possibility is if a on topic web site has a public FTP on a static IP.

Example 1

Use of these is pretty basic.

For a URL.
First paste the link in the post box.
Then select it.
Then click icon 1. (See image above for Example.)
The following will show in the post box [ url ] link [ /url ].
And will display like this http://site_link_ here.com in your post.

For an E-Mail.
First paste the link in the post box.
Then select it.
Then click icon 2. (See image above for Example.)
The following will show in the post box [ email ] link [ /email ].
And will display like this E-Mail_link_here@site.com in your post.

For a FTP.
First paste the link in the post box.
Then select it.
Then click icon 3. (See image above for Example.)
The following will show in the post box [ ftp ] link [ / ftp ].
And will display like this ftp://FTP_link_here.com in your post.

For those more advanced computer users remember to save time you can enter these links manually.

Another way you can do a URL is to put a name to show rather than have the URL shown.
This is especially helpful on long URL's.
Example [ url = http :// sitename . com] name here  [ /url ]  (Remember to not put in spaces as I have done.  I have inserted spaces so it will show as text not as a url.)
This will show in a post like this name here.

17.) How to create Hidden content in your posts
« Reply #17 on: October 27, 2014, 11:47:46 am »

How to create Hidden content in your posts.

In this post I will go over using the hidden content feature in a post.

For this feature to be useful it should be used sparingly.  Overall I would say only to use it for very special content and for cases when the posters links of a particular content are being messed with.

You should put useful information in your title and outside f what you have hidden so other users of the forum at least have some idea about your post.

using the hidden feature to hide stolen links and content will result in your post being deleted at the discretion of the forum Mod's and Admin.   Continued abuse can get your status downgraded or your account banned at the discretion of the forum Mod's and Admin.

Its actually pretty simple to create hidden content in a post.

First off create a post as you would normally do.
Then use the Preview button to check that everything works.
Then select the part of the post you want to hide.
(In general I would say to just hide the link to a file host.)
(In my Example I have hidden the thumbnail and the file link but left the sample image viewable.)
Then click on the hide link. (See Example 1 below.)
Then you can save your post.

When you open your post it will look normal.  (See Example 2.)
When others look at your post it will have the part you have hidden replaced with a hidden post image and a bit of info. (See Example 3.)

Sample of post code I used to make the sample post.

18.) How to compress files using Windows/Mac internal Zip Utility
« Reply #18 on: October 27, 2014, 11:50:06 am »

How to compress files using Windows/Mac OSX internal Zip Utility.

ZIP compression is basically the same on any windows machine from win95/98 with plus to win8.1.

First select a file(s) or a directory.
Then right click on the file(s) or directory.
Then goto "send to" on the right click menu.
Then select "compressed folder". (Its the little folder icon with a zipper.)
The zip file you created will now be in the directory the file(s) or folder were in.
You can rename the file just leave the ".zip".  (The file will be named after the file you right clicked on.)
On Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, you will get the option to create a name when zipping.

Below you will find links to cleaned up images of Microsofts info pages.

You can use this to create zip files containing files, folders, or both:

    * Right-click on a file, folder, or files you want to zip
    * Select “Compress Items”
    * Find the newly created .zip archive in the same directory

Here is an image with more detailed info.

19.) How to compress files using WinZip
« Reply #19 on: October 27, 2014, 11:50:59 am »

How to compress files using WinZip.

Here I will go over using WinZip to compress files.

WinZip used to be one of the most used compressed file utilities but when ZIP file support was included in Windows 95/98 with plus and subsequent windows versions there is no longer much of a reason to add WinZip to your system.  Still you will find WinZip installed on many systems so I will go over its use here.

For most users I recommend you use windows built in ZIP utility to create or extract zip files and WinRAR to compress and uncompress RAR files and to uncompress almost any other compressed file format.

One thing I think I should go over is Explorer integration.  If you will see the image below which is a page from WinRAR's options you will note the link at the bottom "Enable Explorer enhancements".  I recommend you turn off this option as any app patching windows as this option does will slow down your system no matter if you are working on a zip or not.  Turning off these "enhancements" does not in anyway change what you can do with WinZip.

Now on to using WinZip to compress a file for upload.
Note please do not use self extract option in WinZip for files you post on the forum.

First open WinZip. (See Example 1.)
Then click "NEW"  (See Example 1 Red Arrow.)
Then set the file name of the zip. (See Example 2.)
Then click "OK". (See Example 2 Red Arrow.)
Then select files to add. (See Example 3 blue outline.)
Then deselect "Include system and hidden files". (See Example 3 Blue arrow 2.)
Then click "ADD" (See Example 3 Red arrow 1.)
Progress bar will run for a while. (See Example 4.)
And finally you will see the files in the zip.
You can close Winzip at this point as your zip is done.

« Reply #20 on: October 27, 2014, 11:52:11 am »

How to compress files using WinRar.

Here I will go over creating a RAR file using WinRAR.  WinRAR is one of the best file compressions programs out there, right after WinZip which has been integrated into windows since 95/98 with plus on up to the present day in Win 8.1.  WinRAR is also my goto program for uncompressing most other compressed file formats.

First open WinRAR. (See Example 1.)
Then Select files to RAR. (See Example 2.)
Then click "Add". (See Example 3.)
Then set archive name.  (See Example 4.)
Then click "OK" (See Example 4 Red arrow.)
Then progress bars will run. (See Example 5.)
This can take a long while.
Then you will see the finished rar in the file list. (See Example 6.)
Rar is finished you can close the program.

21.) How to use WinRar to create a multi-part rar
« Reply #21 on: October 27, 2014, 11:53:53 am »

How to use WinRar to create a multi-part rar.

Here I will go over creating a series of RAR files using WinRAR to create a multipart archive file.  Making a multipart RAR is very similar to making a regular RAR file.  A multipart RAR should only be used to split large files for upload.

First open WinRAR. (See Example 1.)
Then Select files to RAR. (See Example 2 highlighted file names.)
Once you select the files you will see the selected byte count.  Then you can use Google calculator to divide the file size bytes. This gives you approximately what size to make the RARs as a video will not compress much.  JPEG image sets will also work here as they will not compress much either.   (See Example 3.)
Then click "Add". (See Example 2 arrow 2.).)
Then set archive name.  (See Example 4 arrow 1.)
Take the byte count you got from Google and put it in the box marked "split to volumes, bytes" move the decimal point 6 spaces to the right as your putting in bytes and Google gave the answer in megabytes.
You will note I point out with Arrow 3 in Example 4 the "Put recovery record".  Lots of people will tell you to use this but in general I would say not to use this as it just makes the archives bigger.  It will not fix a barfed download and you just don't see the random bit errors that used to crop up.
Then click OK. (See Example 4 Arrow 4.)
Then progress bars will run. (See Example 5.)
This can take a very long while.
Then you will see the finished RARs in the file list. (See Example 6.)
RARs are finished you can close the program.

Applications for File host Upload.

For general users I recommend you just use a normal Mirroring File host.

I have provided this link for those who are experienced with Firewalls, System Protection, and Advanced Computer use.  There are a vast number of security concerns with this type of App.
(I have not used this App myself so I can not comment on either its functionality or security.)
