Muscular British Bodybuilder MARINA CORNWALL

Some Info about MARINA:

Where and when were you born? In Southampton, Hampshire although my mother is Maltese and father was English I was born here.

What is your profession? I am a self employed Personal Trainer and Sports Masseuse

What kind of activities/sports did you do before you started lifting weights? I was sports captain at school and I was a sprinter myself participating in the 200 metres and relay. I then competed in a National Cross Training challenge called Ultra fit for 7 years and also trained to be a contender for the London weekend television series “The Gladiators”

How and when did you get involved into lifting weights? I was in my twenties. I used to attend aerobic classes at a local centre and then I got interested in lifting weights and training for the Gladiators which I knew I needed to be not only very fit but strong also

Was it a goal for you to compete in bodybuilding competitions right from the beginning or was it something that grew in your mind as time went on and you saw the progress in your body? No it was not something that I had always wanted to do even though my uncle in Malta was a bodybuilder I was not interested at the time. It was when I was training for the Gladiators and Ultra Fit championships that my body started changing shape because of the type of training I was doing for the sport at the time. It was when I met a very close friend of mine Don Styler who had his own physical training centre in Gosport Hampshire he used to train guys for the marines, paras, navy etc etc. I went there initially to do some hard core training with ropes etc and it was Don that encouraged me to have a go at bodybuilding he could see the potential in me to compete although it had never crossed my mind before. He knew I was dedicated and committed to my training and was prepared to put in the hard work to get to where I wanted to. Don did and still runs his own bodybuilding show as used to compete himself. In approx 1993 I competed in his show having only dieted for a week

What was your first competition and how did you place? Yes it was my first show and I did not place anywhere

And which contest has been the biggest success for you yet? In 2002 I won the British Natural bodybuilding show formerly ANB and now NPA. And again in 2004 in the under 52kg category

Please describe a typical day in the life of Marina Cornwall.
Up at 5.15 am. Sort items needed for the days work, food training wear, paperwork, change of clothes
Travel over to another gym where I teach classes and do my own training with weights for approx 45mins. Sometimes I swim after or do some cardio depending on whether I have a client at 8.00 am or not.
If I have a client at 8.00 am I would have my porridge at the gym and travel over to the gym where I work as a freelance personal trainer.
Clients at 8, 9 10 then protein drink or meal replacement
Home for couple hours and get a little nap for 40mins if I can
Wake up eat and take a nice shower
Back to the gym for the afternoon for clients
Snack or protein drink in between clients
Finish approx 9.30 pm
Make few phone calls
Eat out sometimes
Home pick up emails, paperwork. Sort bags out from the days work prepare things needed for the following day
Protein drink and bed approx 12.30 pm. Not enough sleep

Please tell me something about your daily training routine. Trying to run your own business in being the best personal trainer to your clients whilst training for a championship title can be somewhat difficult. Trying to fit it all in and particularly with the hard dieting and making sure you get all your meals in between a very hectic day is sometimes very tiring as I never seem to get enough rest or sleep.

But when you are determined you can achieve anything you want. When I first won the British championships in 2002 my day starting with a client at 7.00 am , 8.00 at the hospital attending to my father who was seriously ill, back to the gym for nine for my next client, doing a full day work, training and running my business and then back up the hospital when I finished approx 10.00 pm. I then lost my father unfortunately in the August of that year whilst training for the brit finals in the Oct. I went on the win the title and felt I achieved it for my father as he would have wanted me to continue regardless of his death. So when people make excuses about training and not having enough time I am afraid I am not very sympathetic because they are not trying hard enough in my eyes.

How often do you train in a week? 6 days normally and when in competition phase normally twice a day separating out the weights and cardio sessions depending on my client base for the day

What are the main differences when you train for a competition and in off-season? Not a lot apart from two sessions a day cardio and weights when in competition phase. Normally would run outside with some of my clients and count that as a cardio session. I train heavy all year around except week before my competition I would use a high rep range. I vary my training systems though.

If you don’t mind would you give me some stats (best lifts and some body measurements)? Bench press 55kg (before I tore my rotator cuff). Deadlift 100k for 4/5 reps. Squat 100k (not below parallel) for 8 reps. I weigh 47kg normally off season and I am only 5’ tall.

Which bodypart is your best in your opinion? In terms of appearance I have been told by butt my males and females which is nice. I feel my back is my best feature and I can always get it very defined and my physio says it is a good anatomy map for students as you can see every detail of all the different muscle groups

What is your favorite exercise in the gym and which one you don’t like so much? I like chin ups and dips as I am good at them. I also like training legs. I dislike shoulders as I feel they are my weakest body part mainly because of the torn shoulder.

Judging in Women’s Bodybuilding has always been criticised in one or the other way. Please tell me your honest thoughts about today’s judging in Women’s Bodybuilding. That is a difficult question because I sometimes don’t know what the judges are looking for or whether they favour certain types or not. I think Kimberley Anne Jones had the best idea when she wanted to run the Gravesend show and have it judged purely my female bodybuilders for the womens category anyway and then maybe you may get a fairer judging criteria.

Please tell me about what else you are doing when you don’t work out (profession, hobbies, etc.) I enjoy eating out, movies, theatre, dancing and most sports and meeting new people

What are your future plans for 2005/2006? I want to retain my British title at the NPA finals in Coventry on the 22nd Oct.

I have just missed obtaining a pro card at the BNBF British finals in Scotland as I was runner up against many heavyweight girls and in fact there were nine girls in the line up.
But I have been invited to the WNBF in New York to represent GB within the British Amateur team competing in the under 55kg category and due to fly out on the 9th Nov for the comp on the 12th Nov. Hoping to win this title would be fantastic and such a wonderful experience.

So in brief I wish to win the British NPA finals and the Worlds in New York then I would like to take a year out to put some muscle mass. But in the meantime next year I would like to have a go at Powerlifting as I am very strong for my size and likely to do well as I would be a natural powerlifter in the lightweight masters category. WATCH THIS SPACE!
