I see Joe and Rachel's relationship (or Joseph and Miss White's) to be more precise, as loving, affectionate, with mutual respect. And she has the final say and is always in control. It doesn't mean that she mistreats him or thinks of him as less of a man. And I think the story focuses on his thoughts and not hers because it's told from his perspective.
