I was told once to have two plots. One at personal scale, and the other at a macro scale. Then have them both resolve together. It makes you look smart and feels satisfying.
To give an example: For personal scale, a man tries to reconcile with his estranged child. For macro scale, the man is being hunted by an organized crime ring. At the end of the story, the man is able to save his child, at great expense, from criminals. He resolves the macro plot and personal plot in a satisfying conclusion.
So toy with wildly differing plots and try to have fun.
