What's your Christmas tradition?
« on: December 25, 2025, 07:23:06 pm »
I don't come from an ultra-traditional family, but we do get together for Thanksgiving and Christmas like the typical American family.

Curious if anyone has any holiday traditions or schticks they enjoy rigidly adhering to.

Today I will eat ham and sip whiskey in front of a marathon of movies I've seen an obscene amount of times.

Nothing less, nothing more.

Tomorrow, I will return to my more responsible diet and workout routine until my last allowable day of the year for slobbery, which is New Year's Eve, before locking into discipline mode starting Jan. 1 through St. Patrick's Day.

This is all very simple and quotidian, but it works for me.

I like this a lot, there’s something satisfying about a clearly defined window for indulgence and then a clean return to structure. The ham + whiskey + familiar movies combo feels very intentional, almost ceremonial in its own way.

My version is similar but quieter: low expectations, repeat movies or music I know by heart, and zero pressure to “optimize” the day. It’s less about tradition for tradition’s sake and more about giving myself permission to pause without guilt.

Simple, quotidian, and sustainable sounds like a tradition that actually sticks.
