I perused this thread and noted the comments regarding judging.  At one of the very early shows in Toronto that was broadcast on NBC, I was sitting right behind the judges, who were mostly cronies brought up by Jim Manion.  In particular, one judge complained that he didn't know how to judge women bodybuilders.  Nevertheless, he was a judge.  In fact he was sitting right beside Manion.  Later, when we obtained the scoresheets, this judge had an identical scoresheet to that of Jim Manion.

At that time (I can't speak of the current rules), judges were ranked based upon how "accurately" they scored shows.  That is, if a particular judge had scores very close to the scores of other judges, then that judge was considered a good judge.  Total agreement was Perfection in judging.

The "logic" behind such a procedure is beyond comment.  A simple question:  If judges were "good" because they agreed with one another, then why have 7 or 5 or 9 of them?  It seems more rational if judges had some disagreements in ranking competitors, then overall results might be more interesting.

And if one speaks with judges, it is apparent that they judge the same criteria in every round.  So why have "rounds"?  Why not judge criteria rather than "rounds"?  Criteria such as muscularity, symmetry, performance, etc.

Ben Francis' results illustrate this judging confusion.  If the Powers wanted to move away from muscular women, all they needed to do was to give a weight to the judging criteria.  E.g., Muscularity might make up 50% for women's BB, but 75% for men's BB.  Obfuscation won out over transparency.  Judging should be all positive, or all negative ((gymnastics), not a mixture.  So downgrading a woman's scores for being too muscular is indefensible.

I was unaware of the politics of the sport. I mean I have since discovered that some shows would award title and trophy to the competitor with the most muscle and elsewhere such would go to one who might have been quite lacking in such. A writer from the long defunct Strength Training for Beauty once told me (via email) that sometimes the title would be awarded to the one whom the judges most wanted to sleep with. Now again forgive me for mentioning this name but I gather at the Gold's Classic (in particular the 1983 one), title went to the woman who was the most muscular as I reckon with Gold's, muscle was the important factor. Well an important factor along with definition, symmetry and presentation.

I wonder what the results would have been had Pillow trained with Bev?

Interesting question, either Pillow would have been able to take her physique to a new level. Or the intensity needed to keep up with Bev would have burned her out. Guess we'll never know.

I wonder what the results would have been had Pillow trained with Bev?

I gather that perhaps Bev was probably the first among the wave of post-Pillow bodybuilders who really sought to punish themselves.

Bev Francis has been the blueprint for extreme fbb. The 1st time in 1983 and going further in the 1991 Ms. O.
She was the definition of extremely massive and yet 30 - 35 years later the WORLD is not willing to accept such standards of beauty ...
Bev Francis is unique.

1983?  I first photographed her in 1978.  After she moved to the U.S. and the "Pumping Iron - the Women" film was started, I received a letter from a law firm in NYC ordering me not to distribute any photos of her.  I thought that this was bizarre as I lived in a different country and disappointing.
